Crate powerblock FORGIVE ME!!!

Post by Curranproducer »

OK OK OK, I know this is not a tube amp or a really toney kind of thing BUT, I am trying to help a buddy of mine with an old Crate Powerblock with a bad input jack. I dropped in a new switchcraft shorting jack, and I get signal going through the amp, BUT when I unplug it there is a bunch of buzz and noise. I cannot find a schematic anywhere for this little thing to see what I am missing sooooo i figured I would ask for a bit of help from you guys. i am not using shielded cable(the ribbon wire broke away from the PCB so I am using simple stranded wire to the three point of contact on the PCB. on the old switch there where two SMT units on the jack PCB but I can not tell what they are. Should i drop a 1M on this like a normal amp or something?

A photo f the jack you removed from the Crate would be helpful. But it seems like the switch isn't shorting you to ground when unplugged. Perhaps you connected the ground to the wrong lug?

Here's a link to the schematics:

I actually own one of these...a guy had 2 of them and he gave me one for fixing the other...they actually sound surprisingly good. The repair that I performed was for an overheating situation, as I recall it required installing a 1M resistor across the pins of the switch...it's been a while!

Good luck!
