Jubilee 2555 Troubleshooting

Post by ampgeek »

I am helping a friend troubleshoot a 2555....from a thousand miles away  It is, generally, functioning well from end to end. A couple of small tweaking type items still remain but I am confident that he will get through those with no problems.

His sense is that the 1/2 power switch (triode connects the EL34s) isn't doing anything at all. He has triple checked the wiring, switch functionality, retouched all of the solder joint and all of the other standard checks to no avail.

Quiescent voltages move in the right direction between 1/2 and full power...but only by a few volts.

I have no practical experience with this set-up but believe that dynamic voltage checks will reveal whether or not it is functioning properly.

Thinking that pounding out some power chords in full power mode with the + end of the DVM on a tube plate and the - end on the screen grid (down stream of the screen resistor). And then repeating at 1/2 power setting will identify a significant difference in behavior.

Unfortunately, I keep getting into a "do loop" everytime I try to think it through to predict what the difference will be.

Hoping that someone can help lead me out of that loop!

TIA,
Dave O.

Have him measure the resistance from plate to screen at the tube sockets (power off, caps drained). In triode mode he should see the value of the screen resistor, and in pentode mode it should increase by the DC resistance of the choke plus half of the OT primary.

Marshall and many other amp brands and also builders do not do the pentode to triode thing the right way that is needed to keep the tube safe!

From the plate to G2 there should be a 100 ohm 2 watt resistor and the same thing from G3 to the cathode, only with the 6L6 type family of tubes can just the G2 to plate resistor be used!
