Is a Univox U-1010 good for modding?

Post by JCM800cloner99 »

I have an opportunity to buy a Univox U-1010 head for $300, I was wondering if anyone had any experience modding these, or even if $300 for one of these is a good deal.

Thanks to all for any input you have.
:D

That amp listed for 605 bucks in 71, it has 10 tubes and was rated at 105 watts so it has some pretty good transformers in it if they are indeed good.
300 bucks to me is a good deal for a cab, chassis, transformers and just maybe some good Mullard preamp tubes!

If its got good old tubes in it.a lot of them did come with mullards and american output tubes. I'm not familiar with that particular amp but some of the smaller amps came with some pretty crappy undersized transformers .

The 1010 and 1011 had transformers at least as good as what comes in the Fender amps these days, a bit undersized, but with even only 80 watts of clean power it a loud amp!

The old Univox ams had a really good chassis and transformers, a decent head shell and lots of glass. But personally, I would strip the board out completely ather than trying to mod the PCB. Just put in a new eyelet board with whatever circuit you decide to build.

My first Express was built on a Univox PA chassis. I didn't use the iron though because I wanted to come as close as possible to "the tone". I called it the UniWreck.

$300 seems ok if you can use the iron. But if not, then it's high. I pai a lot less but it was a long time ago.
