tranny proximity
A friend of mine bought a Marshall 1986 Clone.
It was making noise...so he brought it to me.
It is a Ceriatone chassis with a turret board built by Nik...No Problem.
BUT...all the wiring of the sockets, switches, pots, etc is a nightmare. You guys have never seen an amp this bad.
It was a virtual tutorial of all the Solder/Assembly mistakes you can make...all in ONE amp.
I had to gut the thing.
Anyway...the Heyboer PT did not line up with the chassis holes. Instaed of squaring the PT to chassis, and drilling as required... "The Guy" tried to use 2 of the existing holes...and turn the PT as required.
Any reason to worry about this.? Do I really "need" to square the PT against the OT.?
AND he burned through the insulation of the other PT primary wires. Is it 220 and 240.?
The wire looks fine, but you can see it .
Any reason you guys would shy away from sliding some shrink tube over the wires, and cover up where he burned through the insulation. I have done it many times. Just making sure it is not a problem on the PT Primary for some reason.
Thank You

Re: tranny proximity
Proximity is not necessarily a problem, but orientation is significant, and even a couple of degrees of rotation can solve hum issues.
Sure, shrink tube your PT wires; use a double layer to make them extra sturdy.

Re: tranny proximity
You can use the headphone test to check this amp's sensitivity to trannie orientation. Remove the bolts and rotate the trannie to the "correct" position while listening to determine whether it makes a difference.

Xitan ..... Thank You
Zippy ..... I have seen this mentioned before, but I never saved the link. Is there a Link/Description of this somewhere.?
Thanks

Re: tranny proximity
Well, I cheat on the headphone trick and just clip on a shielded cable with a jack on the other end to the output leads on the OT and run it to a stereo, and apply power to the PT.
In this setting, you're amplifying the noise to the point that you won't be able to get the hum to completely go away. But at some orientation, there will be a significant drop in the hum level.
Amplifying it rather than using passive headphones removes all subtlety.

From our friends over at AX84 Site:
This is the best way to find the quietest place to put a reverb, output, driver, or any other signal transformer to get the least hum. CAUTION: THIS INVOLVES WORKING ON THE AMP WITH WALL VOLTAGE PRESENT. WALL VOLTAGE CAN BE FATAL.
First set up the power transformer. If it's not installed yet, all the better, but if it is, this will still help. If the PT is not installed, wire up the primaries to a power cord, but do not wire up any secondaries-- tape the ends of the secondaries. If the PT is installed, fine, just make sure there is no circuit on any of the secondary leads (pull all tubes, and disconnect leads and tape them as necessary).
Now set up the signal transformer (output, reverb, whatever). Hook one set of OT secondaries (your choice, but I usually go from ground to the highest impedance tap, don't worry about impedance matching here!) to a set of headphones. Tape the primary leads.
Put the headphones on, plug in the power cord, and start moving the signal transformer around. Try it all over the chassis, and also rotate it. While you might expect the least hum with the transformers as far from each other as possible and at right angles (and that may be the case for you), it might come at an odd angle and/or position. Sometimes the least hum occurs when the transformers are side by side. When you find the quietest spot, use a permanent marker to mark where the mounting holes should be.
If you have more than one signal transformer, repeat this for each one. When you're finished, unplug the PT. That's it!

So...there is plenty of "gain" to run the headphones.?
It picks up that much signal...right off the secondary of the "dead" OT.?
Thank You

I used to hang out on a board devoted to Jeep Wranglers. Some guy had apparently destroyed transmissions in two of his jeeps in one weekend. He posted "I blew two trannies this weekend."
The first response was "I bet they enjoyed that."

OH.....OK.
I had never done this before
I powered up the PT.
Set it at the angle the "amp builder" had it set at ..... and I also turned the PT at the typical 90 degrees, and I can hear no change/improvement..
Thank You

What I do is just a little step further, and I couldn't be more happy. I plug it into a microphone preamp, load up my recording program, arm a track for recording that mic input, and look at the meter. I hear the hum out of the speakers, and can watch the input level rise and fall with even more precision than I can hear. I'll never do it a different way.
Hey, just be careful with that live PT there, okay?
Play your guitar(s)!

Did you guys ever hear about RVZ's encounter ?
Skynyrd played Tampa Stadium with Chicago way back in 1974. After the show, Ronnie decides he wants to hit a bar. Luck of the draw happened. It was not a pretty site, I'll tell ya. One particular client ended up "back at the hotel", and took an unexpected flight off the second floor balcony, courtesy RVZ. It was UGLY!!
Geez, that night was INCREDIBLE. We all went back to our hotel rooms to catch some sleep...we had a 6 AM flight to catch. Not even 10 minutes went by when we heard this screaming coming from Ronnie's room "DONT KILL ME DONT KILL ME!!" Seems that the 'girl' he was with turned out to be a guy. A good lookin' girl, too! Ronnie pushed 'her' head through the tv set, took the mirror off the wall and hit 'her' what that, too.
As Andrew Dice Clay once again "You take the girl home, put your hand down her dress...You're holdin' a TREE TRUNK...OH!"
Next morning at the airport Ronnie's sitting there with cuts all over every knuckle. I think 'she' also may have lost all 'her' teeth. As for why Ronnie wasn't arrested?...I don't know. I expected it. We had an EARLY flight (6 AM) to catch back to Mobile, Alabama and we were sitting there at the Tampa airport waiting for the cops to collect him. WHAT A NIGHT
