What to build :)

Post by sliberty »

There is always some inspiration, right? You get a chassis, or a nice OT, and decide to build something with it.

I just scored a Blues Junior cabinet, and since I previously built a Brown Princeton into a similar cabinet, I have a chassis as well (I bought a spare at that time). So I want to build another small combo.

I think I want another 2x6V6 amp, something with a simple signal path, with mostly full, round cleans all the way up the dial. Not looking for the thinner Voxy tones this time, which is why I am thinking 6V6, but if you have ideas that suit my description with EL84's, I'll keep an open mind.

I don't want to struggle to fit the tubes along the bottom edge of the chassis, so single channel, and simple are key. I'll most likely have to buy the iron, so whatever works there is fine.

I played a nice SF Princeton Amp (non reverb) at the Philly Guitar Show last Saturday, which did what I am talking about (clean all the way to 10), so that circuit is already in the running. And since that amp has Bass and Treble, it is different enough from my Brown Princeton copy to be acceptable.

But what else might fit the bill?

Maybe not very different from what you are thinking...the Marshall 18W TMB is uncomplicated. You can easily buy a proper turret board for the layout. I believe swapping 6v6 for EL84 is a simple matter of changing Rk. To dampen the Marshall vibe and get more clean from it, simply reduce the two 470K power tube grid leak R's to 220K or even lower. The 18W guys think this sort of mod is heresy, but I can tell you when I built mine (with 6GK6; EL84 but different pin out) I couldn't get into the sound with the 470K's at all. 220K floated my boat. If you need a schematic, Weber has a decent one on line. I have a layout diagram from 18watt.com if you can't find one. I don't think you can go wrong with this based on what you say you are looking for.

I once built a 6V6 Hiwatt that mostly stays clean all the way up. Probably the loudest 2x6v6 I've ever heard and the only 6v6 amp Ive played that can keep up with a loud band. Trinity has a schematic I worked off, mine was single input. Bell-like cleans.

Can you link me to the schem, or just post it here? I haven't been able to find it on the Trinity site.

Yep! I also used some of the info/schematics on M. Huss' site. I was goin for the 6V6 Townshend thing so I referenced the CP103 reissue scheme as well, and came up with some sort of single input hybrid.

Pretty different from what you describe, but I would recommend a Small Special. I think it would fit. Lots of clean.

I literally just took the small special circuit out of a 6V6 test bed, just to try something else(that didn't work so well ;(), but not because it isn't a great clean amp :D
