Hammond 290AEX for tweed Deluxe? Really?

Post by Dingleberry »

Hi.

My friend bought a transition era 5C3 deluxe, with 12AY7 and 12AX7 preamp tubes.
I need to change the power transformer to get it running with 230Vac.
I have one Hammond 290AEX (same as 290AX, but with 230Vac primary)
on hand that I could use but I'm a little curious about the B+ current capacity of that Hammond PT. All web shops lists it as a replacement for tweed deluxe, but most data sheets says it delivers
325-0-325 @ 70mA and Hammond's own data states 325-0-325 @ 81mA. Either way isn't that too low for 2 x 6V6 cathode biased, 12AX7 and 12AY7?

Haven't used that Hammond PT before so I have no experiences how hard abuse it can take and can you push it to it's limits and be just fine?

Any info welcome.

You need 70 ma just for a 14 watt output stage, no less some juice for the preamp tubes, and the 325 volts is before your tube recto pulling out some 50 volts of that! The Hammond PT will work out fine if those are its true specs!

Thank you for answering Stevem. Yeah, the voltages will be spot on. I was just little concerned about that 70mA being enough for 2x6V6 and two 9 pin pre amp tubes, but it will probably be fine.
