Hi Guys.
Just want to share some impressions and want to ask a question on the amp.
I was messing/playing with the tubes, swapping the ax7 to at7 and au7 , and had the impression that in some ways there is no choice ( in terms of sound) for v1 and v3 that needs to be an ax7.
V2, instead gave me the impression to be the one that doesn't affect the richness of the sound , but is affecting the type of tone you can get from the amp.
I mean all 3 tubes ax, at, au, sound great ( yeah , the gain changes) as v2, but each one gives a different tone. At the point that I was thinking as V2 a 12dw7 so to have 2 different sounds available at the flip of a switch.
Have you got similar impressions on this?
Furthermore I would like to know if somebody has tried for v2 a 6sl7 or 6sn7 type of tube, and which is the result with this arrangement.
Thanks
Paolo

Tube 3 is the phase splitter... in order to keep power tubes working in the right way respect to the pre part you need to keep it 12AX7.
Tube 1 is very important, because it gave the right gain to the pre part, while the 2 is used only for 1/2 tube but works differntly respect to the 2 stages of tube 1
If you change tube 1 (I keep it always 12AX7, and changed Brand) you will have more or less gain, thinner or fatter sound. I tested Sovtek 12AX7WC-LP-LPS, JJ, Tung-sol, GT, and all of them sounded very different. Now I use the EI (that is a re-edition of the old telefunken).
I don't like to change the 2nd tube because it change dramatically the behaviour of the amp in the sense of reaction and dynamics. I don't like Changing the 12ax7s to a au or.. anywhere: it seems that something is missing when you are playing and need more power..
My amp is an home made express, but 6 months ago I changed completely the pre part according to K60 for some months and then came back to express.

Ciao Stefano ( where are you from? I'm from Padova).
What you say is true just in full distortion, while ( like me ) if you are trying to stay in a boundary territory in between clean and distorted sounds, with at7 as V2 i got the best sound for my tastes working with the switch in gradual mode and volume between 11 and 12.
So far the best dynamics and harmonic behaviour is achieved in my case with V2= at7.
Keep in mind that I'm using mostly a 335 style guitar and a telecaster,
with 2 pearce open back 1x12 cabinets.
Yes, probably I'm using this amp not in his "full glory", but that's the way I like it.
Ciao

Hi.. from Varese.
Probably you are right.. I never had in my home a real k60.. but only my modded express.. and I didn't like it with a sovtek 12au7 (the only one I had at home)
I think that in this way it looses some character and reaction..
I like last knopfler's sound.. ok his komet has been prepared specially for him by mr. Fisher himself, and I think you can have this sound (or similar) with volume at 11 o'clock, gradual mode, and turning all tone pots to about 10 o'clock.
don't forget to turn down the volume of the guitar... but I think you know better than me.
In my experience (oly modding completely my amp)... a k60 pre has less distorsion but clean in a different way than the express..
anyway I had a less distorted sound (then now) putting a JJ in the 1st and 3 positions.. but I don't like their sound.
