Hifi transformer? What can i use this for?

Post by beasleybodyshop »

I found one of these things yesterday at a garage sale. looks like its a 15W OT with 10/8/5K primary taps.

Think it would be good for a Vox AC15 or maybe a 15W Rocket?

It appears to be a single ended OT. AC-15 uses a push/pull output.

I was going to say it looks like a universal PP tranny, with the #4 connection ("B") as the center. You should confirm that with your meter. Then it's just a question of what can you build that's only 15W with the available impedances. EL84 or 6V6, maybe 6L6 if you keep the plates on the low side. EL34s if you connect them as triodes.

Ah, that makes sense.

Google says it is a 15W PP tranny made in Japan. Google must be right :o
if it is hi-fi 15W it is probably 20W or more for guitar  Surely it is good for a pair of EL84 or 6V6.

Those are expensive, check eBay but I think it's like a $150 OT. I wouldn't hesitate to do an AC15.

I hunted all through that garage sale to find another one, thinking that it was part of someones Hifi build, but to no avail. I paid 5 bucks for it, so I think it was worth it 8) They also had a huge, old record player console that was the size of a large coffee table lol. And the large collection of Rosemary Clooney and Lawrence Welk records.

You left those behind ?!?!? That's what your transformer's for - to build that "back to mono" amp so you can enjoy all those old records in full frequency high figh.

Extra points for Steve Lawrence & Eydie Gorme' discs.

Double extra points for Nat King Cole (one of my favorites).

Boxes of old records also make excellent weights, handy when doing tolex gluing. What I'm doing this morning. Without enough ventilation. The fumes haven't affected me, much.

A friend once mentioned that when oil gets crazy expensive we'll start recycling old record to make fuel. I wants to make the car with the pulverizing, liquifying, refining, machinery built in, with a slot in the dash to feed the records as you drive. That way you can hold on to the Blue Notes, Funkadelics, Beatles Butcher Babies you find, but reach into the milk crate in the back seat and feed the Boston Pops and Ray Conniff LPs into the hopper as you go. Instead of gas station to gas station you'd go from old record store to old record store. "Oh, crap we've got just 5 LPs left - wait, look! A yard sale!

Just don't f'up and feed the Beatles Butcher Baby into the hopper thinking you've grabbed Bulgarian Festival Dances instead.

Hey I learn my best licks from those Bulgarian festival dances. Where else can you find alternating measures of 23/8 15/8 9/4 and like that? And those wacky scales besides. Makes dancers who try to follow fall off the floor! Pass the slivovitz... Now THAT's a PARTY!

Ok, we can hold on to that one. I can see we aren't going to get far with you in the car. How about the Fausto Papetti records? you can keep the covers.
