Gulbransen APS-4 rotary speaker help

Post by EtherealWidow »

Hey guys. I've mentioned a couple of times a Gulbransen organ that a friend of mine bought for me to mod for him. I've decided to follow in Cygnus' footsteps and turn it into a Spitfire. The problem I'm running into is the rotary speaker he would still like to implement. It was run off of a small circuit inside the amp itself and I'm having trouble finding a schematic for this particular organ. I don't know what voltage to supply it with. It does come with its own 2 prong plug and works when plugged into the wall, but I'd rather not burn this thing up by lack of knowledge. Thanks for any help.

(Note: I asked to have this post deleted because after having plugged it into the wall and finding it operational, I figured it was a dumb question, but to aid others in growing their knowledge was asked that it remain up.)

Haha. No no. Not nearly as dumb a question as I'm capable of. Just wondering the best way to provide power to a Leslie speaker I pulled out of an organ. Turns out it has a plug. I'll probably just rectify the AC, put a rheostat in series to make the speed adjustable, and call it a day.

Its bad manners to delete your post just because you solved your problem (whatever it was). This is not your private support forum, its a public forum where we share information and learn from each other. By deleting, you are actively preventing others from learning from your experiences.

Even a stupid question will be helpful for someone...

Correct. The question could have been on someone else's mind and now they won't have the benefit of knowing a potential answer.

Don't forget, EW, there are a LOT of people just starting out in this world of glowing glass bottles of joy, and many of them aren't members yet. They lurk in the shadows because they're too afraid of asking questions that might be considered "stupid", but there are NO stupid questions when you're learning.

And some of us with moderate experience still ask dumb questions because we have a brain freeze and can't figure something out. Then when someone with a ton of experience answers, we do the forehead slap and realize we knew that already. It happens. Sometimes just typing out the question will lead you to the answer.

Well I guess the thread could've been handled better. Definitely not trying to impede anyone's progress and I have no problem with posting the completed results and answering anyone else's questions about the build.

The question was dumb because I thought it would need its own power supply, but it plugs right into the wall with a 2-prong plug. It works just plugged into the wall and I don't have to figure out what voltage it runs off of.

No, that's not dumb at all. There are several experienced electrical engineers here that can tell you everything you need to know including alternatives for the stock hookup.

I'm not one of them but I'm sure they'll pipe up soon. 8)
