RCA JAN 6V6GTY Pinout

Post by Blackburn »

Just scored these three for a great price and took a look at them yesterday when they arrived and noticed something unusual about the pins... These have a pin 1 out of the base. Six pins on the bottom got my attention and I called a buddy who might know and he said the base might have been leftover from the old metal tubes, where pin 1 is the envelope. I was simply wondering if it would be alright to use the pin as a jumper for something and he wasn't sure if it would be a good idea, as it may just be wired internally. Anyone here familiar? My assumption would be that there's no internal connection and it's okay to use it. I tried looking inside, but it's too difficult to tell.

I don't belive pin 1 is internally conected to anything in a glass 6v6 so you should be ok

Pin 1 may be connected electrically to the grey coating on the interior of the glass, which acts as a shield. I would say that pin 1 should be grounded, and not used for a tie point except to the cathode. http://www.audiotubes.com/6v6.htm

Times 2 on the grounding!

If pin 1 was used as a high-voltage tie-point, and the glass output valves were replaced with metal-can 6V6's, then the pin 1 voltage would appear on the outer surface of the valves.

Good practice suggests pin 1 should only be connected to ground or left floating, unless there was the possibility of EL34 valves being used in the amplifier. In this case pin 1 should be connected to pin 8 ( cathode ).
