Steel chassis - aluminum plugs??

Post by angelodp »

I have a donor chassis that I would like use and need to plug some of the holes and and re-drill new ones. I am contemplating laying in an aluminum plate that is about the right size. It would be screwed down and then I will make the new holes for the tube sockets. Is combining steel and aluminum going to be a problem.

Combining different metals is always risky but if you put your ground wires to the steel chassis you should be ok. I have an amp that I did the same thing with and haven't had any issues.

Thanks, yup thats the plan. Do you have a pic of what you did?
I might see about a proper steel plate at HD tomorrow.

Cheers

As long as you keep it dry you'll be OK with mismatched metals.

Take care to keep it dry to avoid galvanic corrosion.
Otherwise, once you have properly grounded it, it's ok.

Tooth washers to secure solid electrical contact between both types of metals and you're perfectly devoid of any possible issues. It's really all about generating a proper, solid ground in means of both safety and overall performance of the circuit.

Ok, this contains zinc as per its MSDS.
In case of some water, zinc acts as anodic protection before the alluminium will start to corrode. Major part is polybuthene, just to give zinc powder a paint like behaviour.
