New SSS Build

Post by mhartman »

Just finished off a new 19" chassis SSS build and I had to show it off in its new cab that just came in from Amplified Nation. That dark brown suede is sweet. Man it gets tight trying to stuff one of these into a 19"chassis, but it came out fine and hum free.

Thanks guys. I'll have to get some clips up here. After selling off my other SSS, I missed that thump you in the chest bass, clean of all cleans sound. I'm really digging it.

Taylor, the cab fit like a glove - no issues whatsoever.

Looks great.
So, is that the same size as an ODS chassis?
Did you position the valves in a single row or two rows like an SSS?

Nice!!! Great job Mike!

Could you post a gut shot? Would really love to see how the insides look.

Btw: you seem to omit the 100R resistors from the cathode resistor/cap junction to ground (where the LNFB goes to). Did you do this for a specific reason?

It really is a tight fit in the 19" chassis. My take is slowly coming along and I am still deciding on where to put two of the 5 preamp tubes. Here are some pics. I omitted the Reverb but will have a Dumbleator. Boards are partly finished, still need to do the PS one.

Edit: I deleted the pics of my build as not to derail and clutter this nice thread.

Thanks in advance,

Electron

Great looking build Mike! Clips are always appreciated as well :)

Inspiration to finally start working on mine :)
I got pretty much all parts collected, apart from the inductor and few resistors and should get into it once I finish another hi-fi monoblock build, my brother (pretty much) forced me to do for him (never had to fight so much for real estate like in this ones miniscule chassis - it is a pure miracle that there's no noise whatsoever).

Thanks guys. I failed to take any gut shots before I boxed it up, but I'll snap some next time I have it open (I swore that I would quit tweaking this amp for a while and just play it and get to know it). To answer some questions, yes this is in an ODS sized chassis. I went with two rows of tubes with the front row up until the preamp boards. No need for DC filaments to do this. I actually took some inspiration from the Two Rock Opal with regard to the tube placement.

Electron, I didn't quite understand your question about the 100R resistors -- PM me and I'll see if I can help out.

Thanks again guys. I'll try to get some clips up shortly (although my playing sucks lately due to the fact that I've spent too much time with a soldering iron in my hand).

I too am working on my own version of the SSS/JM TR amp. I opted to build a 22"X8"X2.5" chassis. It makes all the difference in the work IMO. This layout is to scale and based off of pictures of Mark's 2Rock build. I opted for the discrete rectifier/bias board though.
