Can I do this?

Post by lgehrig4 »

I blew fuse and power tubes in my new Concorde build. It was working fine with JJs, but I wanted to try a pair of old Winged Cs that I had and I guess they weren't up to the 500V ;)

Anyway, here's my question. I wanted to remove the power tubes tonight and burn the amp in using an ipod. I don't have a 750mA fuse handy, only a 1A. Can I use the 1A just for this burn in or no fuse at all since there won't be power tubes plugged in?

Thanks!

I will confess that I do not understand the logic behind "burning in" an amplifier with no power tubes installed.
Can you explain the rationale a bit more?

It's not burning in the entire amp, just the caps in the preamp and I guess as far as the signal transfers. I learned about it either here or on the gear page.

I couldn't speak a out it technically, but I could vouch that it did make a difference with my last build and so far with this one before I blew my el34's.

You can probably forego the B+ fuse with no power tubes installed and not worry. The pre tubes tend not to be enough of a hazard to take anything out with them if they go. With the power tubes installed, 750ma or 1a won't make much of a difference because if one goes, it'll likely pull more than 1a.

Hmmm, that sounds like something you're more likely to "learn" on the Gear Page... 8)

Sorry to interrupt the fun. I emailed a respected builder today about this and the answer I got was new to run the amp without tubes. Not sure where I found got the idea from in the first place, but lesson learn to verify information unless I am familiar with the source.

Your voltages will be artificially high if you run your amp without the power tubes. Just play your amp normally, this whole capacitor burn in thing is overrated.

+1000

The amp wants you to play it and it knows when it's being lied to with a signal generator...
