About 10 minutes later, I put some tubes in my latest 18watt build, and there was a crazy rattling sound.
The voltages all checked OK, and it sounded fine except for the metallic crunch (not the good kind, this was more like shaking a metal box full of nails and screws).
So I turned it right-side up and popped in all new tubes just as a quick check, fired it up and it still rattled like crazy. I could hear that it was coming from the PT.
So I squeezed the PT bells with one hand, and the rattle went away
I gave it a couple more good squeezes, and checked to make sure the bolts were tight (they were).
Now the rattle is all gone and the amp sounds great. But I don't trust it. So I guess I'll just keep my eye (ear?) on it and see if the gremlins come back...
btw it's a simple and quick build using a Superlite II PCB, with just the addition of an IRF820 source follower before the tone stack:
