Tube Depot Rant

Post by passfan »

What the heck is wrong with Tube Depot lately. I order some things and I pick up a set of alpha pots for an express with a 3/8" bushing. They send me a 25k and 5 k in a 3/8" bushing and 3 1M in a 1/4" bushing. So I call them up and they apologize and get 3 more out to me right away. The new ones come in and now I have 3 more 1M in a 1/4" bushing. Okay I email back this time and this is the email I get back:
Hmmm...interesting.

I picked the replacement parts myself and checked them against the
records in our system and verified it is the correct part. And I just
had the production manager go back and verify with me. I am in no way
questioning you...I just wonder how this has happened.

Now where I come from this sounds like I'm being accused of something here , especially when you ) offer no solution to the problem and leave the email hanging and ) mention that you're not accusing me of anything in the email. So I send them back a picture of all the pots together so they can see their idiots and for good measure send them this:

http://www.tubesandmore.com/products/R-VA1MA

and explain to them how to use the spec guide and what bushing actually stands for.

While they didn't offer you a solution, I don't think you are being accused of anything. I'd maybe send back the wrong parts as a show of good faith that you aren't squeezing them for free stuff.

I use CEDist now but I have never had an issue with anything I've ordered from them. I don't think I've had a single part missing or be erroneous in dozens of orders and they take returns with no issues IME. Sorry for your troubles!

I actually don't even see 1/4" bushings on their site, are they sending you 24MM pots with 8MM bushings instead of 24MM pots with 3/8" bushings? I bet they have their stock messed up, maybe ask them to have their tech double check it?

That's it Eddie and I've asked them just that. And that was the response I got. The plan is good , the plan is never wrong routine. It would be comical if I didnt have a customer waiting on a build.

I have been on on the other end of this where I have had a customer swearing blind I did not supply the base part of a tube shield,so resent another one, and he said it did not have the part again, I then got him to take a photo and I had to very kindly explain that I had sent the parts he just had to take them out the bag and take them apart. sometimes suppliers cock up sometimes customers do... getting to the point where you know what the issue is is not always easy.

According to the pictures on their site, one has a cast body and the other has a stamped body that the shaft goes through and there is a slight color different in the metal. Other than that I don't see much difference between the two.

I can see how easy it would be to put them in the wrong bin, maybe you could send them a picture comparing what you got with what you have?

I never liked that place for anything.

Without going into much detail, I bought a couple different power tube quads (6L6GC) that drifted way beyond most accepted ranges.

They must not burn in their tubes before they match them.

OTOH, Doug's Tubes do burn in their tubes and match them after.

I have bought three quads of 6L6GC tubes from Doug's and none of them ever drifted beyond 5ma between the quad.

I am about done getting tubes from them. I got a burned in tube from them that was bad recently. The last two pairs of JJ's I got had jingle bells. And as this post describes they are somewhat bad at small specific parts orders. I just tried a JJ 5751 I ordered from them about a year ago for the first time, and guess what... Doesn't work.

Despite all that, I will continue to order parts from them. Good selection, prices, and shipping. And in the sake of fairness, a lot of the tube issues probably are not their fault.

If you like JJ tubes you should check out Eurotubes.
That's all he sells and supposedly burns them in and matches them.

CE has sent me a few wrong parts. They always made it right until recently, on one order. I just got authorization to return 10 bad can caps no problem.
Btw, they were the 50/50-500 black cans. They all leaked at 500vdc. Would not form. 450 ok, . From now on I'll only get the F&T cans for Marshall's etc.
I did have more than a few tube issues and their matching sucks.
Now I buy direct from new sensor, the matching has been very good and they replaced the one bad tube I had out of the hundreds I have received .
