I killed a Sozo with one slip of the iron...

Post by Blindog »

So I was adding a variable slope and switching out a silver mica cap for a ceramic disc in my Plexi style build. I plugged her up to check the results, and noticed I had a ratty, fart filled distortion with the amp on about 5-6 (bright channel). I started checking voltages and noticed the cathode follower voltages were low after the 100k, and I had 0 volts on the .68uf/820 to ground. That's when I saw the damaged cap. I was surprised because I've knicked some Mallory 150's before and they survived...but it does seem the outer tube is bit thinner than those caps, at least on a .68uf. Lesson learned!

Yep, $4 down the drain...at least .68 Sozo's aren't so pricy. I ordered a couple more, the whole amp has them so I must feed my OCD ;)

I've had that happen multiple times with Sozos way back and never actually had one fail on me. I'm surprised because the damage on yours really doesn't seem that extensive. :?

I've done that to a Mallory cap. Terrible sound

It's the kind of thing you only do once in life - I changed my layouts for more space between parts and it's not happened since

Yep, I've melted Mallory 150's before.
Usually I pull it as soon as I notice the damage.

When soldering in tight spaces, I often clamp in one-or-more forceps to act as a shield and heat-sink for adjacent delicate parts/wires.

I know right? I was surprised as well...it measured "0" on my cap meter out of circuit. Just my luck I guess
