Shopping spree for amps.

Post by galtjunk »

I walked into a local 2nd hand music store yesterday.
I usually can't buy anything from these guys because they set their prices above retail and won't usually negotiate.
I saw a Garnet amp with 2 6l6s and tremolo.
It was marked $159.
I saw a WEM Dominator marked at $100.
It had a full set of mullards and a spider frame celestion 15 in it but it was wired for 220.
I asked if they had anything else with tubes in it and they brought out an Earth Sound Research G1000. It's a twin reverb clone.
So I left the store a little over $300 poorer but 3 amps richer.
I think the Garnet is a Rebel Delux. It has Limited Edition engraved on the Garnet logo. It works great.
The Earth had one 6l6 with no vacuum. I pulled one of the tubes from the Garnet and the amp works fine. I need to install a new rca connector in order to test the reverb on it.
I found a line transformer at a buddies shop and tested the WEM.
It's a MKIII model and it's a keeper.
I just found a schematic of the WEM and it looks like it has a 110v tap on the power transformer.
Score!
I have a buyer for the Garnet and two guys are fighting over the WEM which I think I'll keep.
Now, what to to with the Earth Sound Research?

Nice finds!
With tax time coming up conciderations take place in selling prices at places like that and others.

Quick, go buy a lottery ticket too!

That's like buying an old $500 covair from the Iwanna and finding out its a 56 corvette. Or the old $50 guitar is a 56 strat. Good score!

Nice finds indeed especially that WEM!

The Earth doesn't get any love in the resale $$ department but as dobbhill says, it's a beast. A very good one, and amenable to any rebuild or mod you might do with a Twin Reverb or Dual Showman Reverb.

One of my customers used to work at Earth when he was a kid. Part of his job was taking still-hot amp chassis off the burn-in rack. He says he got his forearms burnt every day, and lots of shocks from still-charged filter caps. He went on to get an education and career as a psychiatrist. Perfect!

The Garnet got a new power cord and the pots were cleaned.
It will get a new home in a couple of days.
The Earth has a power tube that has lost vacuum.
I pulled it and noticed that the index peg had broken off and stuck in the socket. I removed it and stuck in an old Yamaha 6l6gc.
All of the preamp tubes are EIC Mullards.
I built an rca jumper plug to test the reverb and trem.
The trem works but no luck on the reverb.
I need to pull the chassis to change out the power cord so I'll check out everything else while I'm inside.
