6V6 to 6BM8 conversion project

Post by 10thTx »

Thought I'd share this project here on TAG also.

I have a Tweed BluezMeister amp that is sort of a Dumblish inspired 12 watt cathode biased amp using a 5879 pentode in the OD section.

It uses a 275-0-275 PT. I normally use 6V6's with a 5V4 rectifier tube.

I figured out that if I use a 5Y3GT rectifier, I can get the power tube plate voltages closer to 305v and use a 6BM8 tube for around a 7 watt amp.

I have not installed a SPDT to switch out between a 270 ohm power tube resistor for the 6V6's and maybe a 360 ohm resistor for 6BM8's but plan to.

More information for anyone interested in this idea is here:

Your not gonna hear much of a volume difference, mainly less head room before the output kicks into clipping.
The 6bm8 does give a bit of a different response since it's not a beam pentode like the 6v6.

That's somewhat correct. 6V6 is barely noticeably louder.

There is a very significant difference though tone wise. I think the 6BM8 sounds far more Marshall-ish and has more compression.

Yes,once again since it's not a beam type tube, it responds and sounds much closer to a el84' or el34.
I have two mid 60s Univox U45B amps that use bm8s in PP with a 12 inch driver and indeed they sound like a little Marshall when pushed with buckers!
