Cherry and Walnut Splined Miter Head Cab

Post by Cantplay »

A man has to use his new saw for something.

I cut up a cherry board and mitered the corners. I glued it to fork the sleeve, and let it dry a few days.

I have no biscuit tool, and wanted to do something to both reinforce the corners, and add decoration. I thought about stitching it with dowels, but decided to try splines. I haven't seen it done much.

I made up a 'sled' to hold the sleeve at a consistent angle, and made a couple of slots
You can see a test piece in this shot.

I made the second slot a different depth to add some variety.

I cut them flush with a pull saw, and sanded it a little. I am still planning a small qtr round off. Wiped with damp rag to show grain.

Nice!

I've done dowels before, and biscuits. I really like the look of those splines. Well done!

Hi John,

Very nicely done. The varied depths add visual interest. I thought of doing a 3/8 or 1/2" splines instead of finger joints. How is the new saw treating you?

The fence is very solid, and the table extension is handy.

You could route the slots with a dovetail bit, then cut pieces to fit.

I went over it with the qtr rounding (mistake hiding) tool.

A quick wipe with the first coat of Tru Oil.
