Post by wattsup »

Which is better for D style amps, carbon composition, carbon film or does it matter? Is there a preferred brand and What wattage rating is best?

Dumble used carbon film for most locations, precision metal film on plate resistors.

Is there a general concensus on a preferred brand? What about wattage? 1/2W or 1W in the preamp?

Well most of the carbon film resistors Dumble used are not made anymore.

The Vishay RN65 metal film plate resistors can still be found at places like Mouser.
They are military spec and close tolerance.

I think most guys like using 1W resistors for ease of use.
Thicker leads, larger body more robust and some say quieter than their smaller wattage cousins.

I think most guys would be hard pressed to tell the difference between a
Xicon CF and a audiophile grade CF resistor.

You can go exotic as you like on components, but when trying to clone a sound, staying as close to original will give best results.

All the stories and facts are sprinkled through these pages.
One just needs to devote some time and do a lot of reading if
you are truly interested in building a Dumble.

Thanks Structo. That ought to be enough to get the ball rolling at least. I want to get as close to the mark as possible - without shelling out he big bucks for NOS parts!

There is a similar discussion going on in the Technical Discussion Forum. If you haven't already seen it, go here: https://tubeamparchive.com/viewtopic.php?t=23936
There's some very good general information on this suject there, with many parts suppliers mentioned.

resistor type

i`m a firm blvr if it sounds good it IS good no matter type used, my best sounding amps are ones where spur of moment, and diversity of components have yielded best results.not for everyone, but hey i`m not everyone! lol!

have fun B4 it`s TOO late!
