Hi all,
Just got a good deal on an Epiphone Futura that is blowing fuses. Looking forward to getting in and messing with this beast. This thing has been cannibalized a bit. A previous owner decided they didn't want a 4x10 anymore and lopped off the bottom two speakers, adding a new bottom to the cabinet. It's not a particularly nice job, in fact it's hideous. I'm debating whether to attempt to pretty up what's left of the original cabinet or go for a head conversion. What do ya'll think you would prefer if you were looking for something interesting?

Unless you have very good cabinet making skills and tools, a fix up job is not so likely to look much better than what you receive. You might be able to convert it successfully to a head cabinet. However, given the amount of work required and the extra care that must be taken to modify it, you are probably far better off getting a new head cab for it. You'll spend less time and possibly as much money reworking it as you will with a new head cab. You are virtually guaranteed to get a good result with a new cab, too, and not so much in doing any rework of the old. Good luck.

Or--tweak the amp to make it awesome sounding and butcher up the cabinet even more to make it look like the crappiest amp ever. Sometimes the "sleepers" are fun.
What?

Hmmm, yes I've got a neighbor who is a cabinet maker and a musician so I might suggest a collaboration. I can see a sweet sweet stained maple cabinet in my head... or, for some reason, I've had that tooled leather tolex on my mind for a long time.

If it were me I'd get the amp sounding the way I wanted it first then if I really liked it I would make a decision on the cab. No sense putting all that money into a cab if you don't like the way the amp sounds.
