Who are you really and what have you done with our beloved Jana? Please give her back to us.

Re: Ground wire
Anything that doesn't have a statistical proof should be granted two whole numbers by independant sources. The smaller number should be divided by the larger. The product should be decimalized only after rounding the fraction down to the nearest 118199 thousandth, then we start inflating..
Signatures have a 255 character limit that I could abuse, but I am not Cecil B. DeMille.

With all due resect to the OP,
I build and repair tube amps. http://amps.monkeymatic.com

Re: Ground wire
All I know is, this thread is fun. It's amazing what kind of answers you can come by when you're not bound by reality.
Re: Ground wire
Jana, a simple solution would be to use two pieces of white wire soldered next to each other and taped together with black electrical tape. We all know that two conductors separated by an insulator has capacitance. The electrical tape will hold the conductors in parallel separated by their insulating jacket giving you capacitance and will darken the tone. The darkening effect is enhanced by the black tape, it must be none more black in color to suck any of the leftover tone out of the ground wire. We also know that electricity flows from the chassis to the circuit so IF you spiral wrap the tape around the wires it must wrap in a way that it allows the electricity to flow to the circuit and not try to screw itself back into the chassis. I had to build 3 amps before I learned this

Re: Ground wire
The CBS fix is to wrap the white wire in black wire.

Why settle for "reality" when you can have so much more?
Re: Ground wire
Johnnyreece,
I tried the dye once but there was an explosion. Let's just say that the police and fire department were involved and I'm looking for a simpler solution.
Overtone,
This is getting kind of complicated. Maybe a circuit board?
Miles,
I know a German word: Prost.
I use it a lot.
NickC,
Him be a her.
Mark,
I have tried the cryo process but I had problems. Sitting outside when it is 20 below and trying to solder wires with mittens on is no fun. But, the whole experience was a selling point for some good meds.
Miles,
What's wrong with mongols on the patio? They sure keep the neighbors away and in their own yard.
Johnnyreece,
I didn't fall off the turnip truck yesterday. 20 payments of $99.99 is as low as I will go.
NickC,
Fox meat isn't all that bad once you get used to it. Kind of like chicken--just tougher and gamier.
Colossal,
Don't worry, I'm on to the sharpie trick and won't do it.
Synchu,
I got confused when you started using numbers but the mandrake root sounds interesting.
Leo Gnardo,
I agree. All wires should have an equal chance at the electrons.
Phil S,
I'm still me. I'm campaigning for the role of forum idiot. I must say, the competition is pretty tough.
eniam rognab,
That's what happens when you spell things backwards.
Miles,
Statistics can be tweaked to support any thesis.
xtian,
Who are you calling Opie?
Johnnyreece,
The bounds of reality have never been a problem for me.
John P,
It only took you three amps? What size fuse did you use?
Firestorm,
ROFL, that is the best solution yet!
NickC,
That's what I have been trying to say--reality is a little box--think outside the box!
Thanks for all the helpful information, everyone. I have decided to swap the polarity of the line and neutral of the AC power. I read that on the interwebs and it is supposed to alter the phase angle of the time constant or something, I guess, I don't know. It has to work because someone said it would.

Re: Ground wire
Jana, swapping the hot and neutral will only work IF you use wires formed from copper mined in the southern hemisphere. The opposite rotation (we all know toilets swirl opposite down under right?) of the copper crystal in the wires will multiply the phase of the ac line. IF you used Northern mined copper the phase and rotation of the crystals would cancel...
Yes, only 3 amps for me, they were clones of boogerera clones of something called a plexi something???
Fuse??
Stay warm my friend, it is a cold night again, prost.

Re: Ground wire
Oh, I forgot about the southern hemisphere thing.
Fuse--3 amps fuse.
How many flies does it take to screw in a light bulb?
Two--but you gotta wonder how they get inside the bulb.

Re: Ground wire
This HAS been a lot of fun, thanx Jana! Looking forward to more.
Besides, as I tell my crustomers, the electrons neither know nor care what color insulation is on their wires. The colors are there for OUR convenience.
Agreed, a mind is a terrible thing.
You betcha! Just ask my client Karl Allweier (All Wire) you may have seen him playing guitar on tour with any number of backup bands.Jana wrote:Leo Gnardo,

That polarity swaps itself and then back 60x a second here in the USA, even in deep-frost Minnesoty, so I'd say relax, give yourself a reason to say 'Prost' and just let it be. 50x a second in many other parts of the world. We aren't there, so let those that are worry about it.Thanks for all the helpful information, everyone.

Re: Ground wire
Shouldn't matter as long as you keep it away from direct sunlight. Everybody knows the colour black absorbs light rays, and all that solar energy has to go somewhere - right? Its a good thing you asked about being worried.Jana wrote:I ran out of black wire and started using white wire for some short ground connections. How will this affect my tone? Should I worry about this?
See my above answerJana wrote: Should I jumper a 10pf cap in parallel with the ground wires to compensate for the wire color?
You should always keep your guitar plugged in and on your lap as you work. You will eventually get skilled at bending the high e with one hand while reflowing solder with your other hand. That's what I would do. YMMVJana wrote:I've been losing a lot of sleep over this and haven't practiced my guitar for a week (too busy swapping the 10pf cap with a 12pf cap to try to hear the difference). What should I do?
Why limit yourself to black? Different parts of the colour spectrum reflect/refract different wavelengths of light.Jana wrote:Would a black sharpie effectively change the white wire to black or does the black color have to go all the way through the insulation?
Sorry I'm using all my 15pF caps at the moment. Mark or one of the other guys might be able to help.Jana wrote:Does anybody have any 15pf caps I can try?

See what I mean? Boost each narrow bandwidth & it's kinda like a "stuck" wah wah pedal effect.tubeswell wrote:Why limit yourself to black? Different parts of the colour spectrum reflect/refract different wavelengths of light.
