WTF, 150M caps price will double!?
Looks like they are "discontinuing" and re-releasing the the same product for double the cost. WTF. Or are these just a different thing completely?

Snacky cakes are my canary. I watch the snacky cake market like a hawk.
In 2005, snacky cakes had the price printed right on them. Twenty-five cents. By 2009 they were fifty cents.
Last week I noticed the displayed brand had changed to something without a price printed on it. It was the same snacky cake as in 2005, but now tagged at $1.29. The quality of snacky cakes has changed too, as has the size of a snacky cake has also become slightly smaller.
New stuff costs near enough to vintage stuff so that it makes near enough no difference. People don't seem to be buying either around here.

I think the shrunken expensive snacky cakes are NOS 2004/2005 snacky cakes.

They know they have us - the amp build & repair market - by the short hairs. If they have a look at competing products - Sozo, Mojo Dijon, etc. - they may realize they've been selling at a bargain price. What to do? Hey, raise the price to "what the market will bear." Mind you, Mallory 150's must add up to about 0.00000002% of Mouser's total sales, but ya gotta scratch up some profit somewhere.Gaz wrote:Looks like they are "discontinuing" and re-releasing the the same product for double the cost. down technical blind alleys . . .

I said it before that the widespread production of high voltage components will reach the point where it's no longer viable to produce and the price will rise and then you see entire lines discontinued.Leo_Gnardo wrote:They know they have us - the amp build & repair market - by the short hairs. That has to happen.
Leo's description is how the ladder works. Sozos will be $8-9 each in the $4 Mallory market. Then.. and then..
I can't even find 10 hours or work every week (or even every month) much less charge more for that work.
I see a problem.

Re: WTF, 150M caps price will double!?
I thought that maybe it was because the discontinued ones were not "RoHS: Compliant" but it appears they are.
When I corresponded with a guy at SBE a couple years ago asking him about the 6PS orange drops, he said that the demand for those high voltage polyester caps was way down and that the Mylar (polyester film) was becoming difficult to source.
So he said they will go away.
But then the Cornell Dubilier group bought out SBE so it's anybody's guess what the future is for them.

What goes around, comes around.
One day the sun will expand and toast the Earth. Humanity will have to migrate through space, to survive and colonize elsewhere. Whilst drifting through the cold, dark, vacuum of space ....... some kid will resurrect vacuum tube based guitar amps (yes, there will always be guitars), just as kids these days have rediscovered the joys of vinyl.
Vacuum tube amps of the future will be wired up with home-rolled caps and resistors, culled from scraps; circuit-bend lithium-ion power packs, and hung out airlocks. No need to have bottles around the anodes/cathodes/grids/etc. I wonder which holographic speakers will sound best?
