JTM45 102 dual channel

Post by trane34 »

Here is my latest. Channel one is a JTM45. Channel two is 102. I figured they share most of the same values in the PI so why not put them in the same amp. I also added a 6g16 bias wiggle trem. Never going to build another amp without trem again. Using a MM Tweed Twin PT and have 440 B+ and about 432 using dual 5u4gb recs. MM O50JM-JM OT with 5900 primary impedance which works well with the Valve Art KT66's I am using. Should get me a little bit extra of head room over the typical KT66 setup, though I don't know if I can tell the difference. Anyways mainly Chinese 9pin except for an odd ball EI in the trem spot.

I've been messing with how to feed the PI. Started off with just one channel feeding it to get a feel for how it should sound and then adjusted the dropping string to each channel. Next tried several different combos of mixing resistors and just was not happy with the balance and how they interacted. Then tied the input grids together and switched one channel out at the PI. Liked the versatility of this setup but kept feeling like I was missing a little ompf and bandwidth. Ditched that and am now running a split PI and a ABY pedal. No global feedback but don't miss it and am happy with the overall vibe.

These pics are when it looked clean, i.e. before it was finished

That is sweet. Did you build an amp like this? I ended up putting the bright channel mixing capacitor on a dpdt as a sort of JTM/5f6 mode switch. On mine I just used two inputs for that channel with a dpdt to bridge them.

I like your amp having both channels available plus tremolo.

I know the 102 has lots of mini switching but it looks like your JTM side also has switching options.

The build was definitely worth putting both channels in. Sometimes I kind of go overkill but I'm happy with how it turned out. I like the compression of the cathode follower in the JTM side and then the clarity of the 102 side. A strat sounds good through the JTM channel and I also like it with the 102 which can be bright if not dialed in. Humbuckers do indeed sound good through the 102 channel. The trem is good at extremes for ambient chords and also good dialed down to put a little shimmer on single note runs.

The switches on the JTM channel are to bridge the bright and normal inputs, bright switch on bright volume, and JTM/5f6 switch. Never thought just that one mixing capacitor between the JTM and Bassman could make such a difference but I feel like I have the option of two different amps with one simple mod. With the JTM mixing capacitor in I hear a shift to more upper mids and more compression. Overall smoother tone. The Bassman mode is more open and raw. Both very useful tones.

No, I just took your written description and drew up an editable schematic.

:)

I do think it's a very cool idea. I'd want passive effects loops for both the Bassman and 102. The SCH editable version shows that.

Yes I agree on the effects loop for both. I just ran out of holes and only have the 102 side hooked up right now. It'll be easy to change the loop over to the JTM when I want to try it out. I'm going to wait on the kit jborders is coming out with and then will build the dlator.

Hey trane34,

Did you build the 102 side with all four triodes in-circuit all the time (no clean / OD switching) and are then using the JTM side for clean? I guess I am asking if the amp is two or three channels…

Thanks,

Yes I guess you could call it three channels. The OD relay switching is there on the 102. I have a three button footswitch with PAB (102), OD (102), and Trem.

Messing with the tremolo through the JTM/Bassman channel.

I feel weird being the only one replying to my post. There needs to be a cricket emoticon. I wanted to show the faceplates I got from Lindz. They look great and he is awesome to work with. I plan on ordering a few more.

Nice Build!

What chassis is that: JTM small or a 100W plexi?

Great work!

That thing has more caps than a military parade! Awesome endeavour.

Did you hammertone that chassis yourself, otherwise where'd you get it?
