Fender hotrod deluxe MIM

Post by jestaudio »

Anyone know of proven mods to sort out the gain channel, its a pile off crap at the moment, very farty and unpleasant, clean is ok, running Sovtek pre,s and Mesa 6l6gc, biased at 38ma

The sell/trade mod, is the best mod available for this amp at the moment. :)

I had an HRD for years. Liked it. Lead channel, no so much. But it did improve with lower gain preamp tube, and keeping the Drive control very low. Found I could get a decent "crunch" channel. But I think it has diode clipping in that channel?

try a pair of 12at7 in the preamp section. there are many lower gain 12ax7 subs to choose from. plate dissipation varies from tube to tube, so be mindful of that...

i will agree though, best mod is to trade! i have had a few of these amps. they do one thing and one thing only; deliver insane volume.

I have found Im really not fond of a 12at7 in anything to do with overdrive or a gain channel. Maybe just me I prefer 12ay7 or 5751 in those position much more musical tube with lower gain. just my 2 cents .

A better speaker or/and cabinet would make it sound a lot better. Also I'd change the volume pot to an audio pot.

+1 on what tribi9 says. i was going to suggest the speaker swap, but if you have a 4x10 or 2x12 it gets costly.
