1x8" cab - plans?

Post by arjepsen »

Hey.

I'm thinking about trying to build a 1x8" speaker cabinet.
I know this will most likely never sound as good as the 1x12 I built from plans at ax84.com, but I need something that doesn't make that much noise... while still sounding as good as it possibly can... :-)
I'd be nice if I could use it with up to about 18 watt amps, but that's not a requirement. However, I will be using different types of small-wattage amps with it.

Any good suggestions on dimensions and/or speakers?

I think your amp with a CCR into the 12" will sound better at lower volume than as is into the 8"

Do a 4/8 cab, you'll love it.

Guys, he's already got a 1 x 12" cabinet, and wants to try a single 8" cab.

Frankly, I would simply scale the 1 x 12" cabinet dimensions down by 25% or so, and start from there.

Being a Blues guitarst, My 5F1 DIY champ (1x6" with 3 watt SE amp) sounds killer, placed in a corner in our SMALL rehearsal room. (we are Bass, Drums + 2 guitars)

Don't get me wrong, I love my Dumble clones through a 1x12 cab, but I tend to run the bass pot pretty low in order not to sound bass heavy and un focused.

IME the full tone sound (with a lot of gain) that sounds great at home, playing alone, is not as great in a band setting...and you don't need a lot of bottom end unless you play in a Blues Rock Trio.

Thanks for the responses - but as stated, I already have a 1x12 that I love!
Made it from the plans at ax84.com and fittet it with a 12gh30.

But I'm kind of on a quest to build something that moves less air :-)
while hopefully still sounding quite good.

My brother built a cabinet - and it works.... for making sound....
but it doesn't really sound that good, which is why I'm trying to find plans for a cabinet that people might think sounds good.

From reading up on the topic, I understand, that 8" just wont sound as nice as a full 12" - but I keep thinking: there must be a 1x8 cabinet that still sounds good....?

Depends on what sounds you like...

If you build a Fender Tweed-like cabinet from solid pine with 1/4" baffle, the cabinet will add to the tone with lots of highs and lows. It'll be small in size, but large in sound.

like this: http://www.mojotone.com/Narrow-Panel-Tw ... er-Cabinet

Just copy the dimensions and don't make a cutout in the top for an amp chassis.

Tip: It'll sound even better, if you don't cover the pine with tweed or tolex. Just give a coat or two of lacquer. You could stain it black or whatever color your prefer, prior to the lacquering.

The thicker the baffle board the brighter it will sound. I would agree using the 1/4" baffle. Love the 8's.
