Here in the San Francisco Bay area, I don't think I've even worn a long-sleeved shirt for a couple weeks. Blue skies and freakishly warm for January. The ornamental plum tree in the front yard has cautiously started blooming, and the roses have similarly decided, "screw this dormancy thing." But it's so dry that the lawn is about to turn brown. 2013 was the driest year on record, and we've had for all intents and purposes zero precipitation so far this "winter," so we're looking at serious drought conditions come summer.

Tomorrow will be our warm day of the week, getting all the way up to freezing (32) and only down to 0 tonight. But Monday's low is looking like -20 and Tuesday's high is -2. These aren't wind chill but actual temps. We haven't gotten the inches of snow others have seen but the ferocious winds have the stuff drifting pretty good. I've had to shovel everyday to get to the car and/or to my shop. The snow's not bad but that wind goes right through you.

Gas company called me at 12:45 am and said there is a natural gas shortage emergency please turn heat down to 60 degrees to conserve supplies.

Mean while Western North Dakota oil fields wastes the gas that they could have tapped for winter usage.

Shortage of LP gas too, my son is still waiting to be supplied.
