What voltage / current? High voltage? Dual rail?

Well, I want to be able to test trannies and anything I need for amp building. I've built 2 hand wired champs and a pcb 18W, but I'm wanting to get deeper into amp building, so I'm making my wish list of things I'll need.

Maybe a variac would be better?

I have used this one since the mid 90's. Surprised at the price, I paid $89.

I also use a smaller Staco which can be found used fo 50 bucks or so.

You can make one out of a variac and a 480 volt industrial control transformer into a bridge rectifier and a capacitor bank, possibly a regulator stage and some means of limiting total current. I'm gathering parts for a similar project. This thread is worth a read.
