Yep, that sums it up skyboltone, Miles,

I guess it really all boils down to one question: Can you pick up a turd by the clean end?

You may actually be on to something here though. Switching jack repairs on SS amps are gonna put my kid through college.tribi9 wrote:Yep, that sums it up skyboltone, Miles,

Amp doesn't work in off position. Bench fee, please.

Re: Some guy at work wants me to fix his line 6 tube amp
what, and give up a 25$ bench fee?Yeah. It walks in and you say no. Easy.
Take the cover off, say no, then 25$ please.....And you can tell him its not what he said ( a tube amp) - so its his diggs and he needs to pay the bench fee.
it really is a journey, and you just cant farm out the battle wounds

I have medallion on my key ring. I show it to people quite often. It says:I said no so much people don't call me for anything anymore.
Absolutely, positively not!
Re: Some guy at work wants me to fix his line 6 tube amp
Just to set the record straight...."IF" it is a Spider Valve "Bogner" designed Line 6 then it is a tube amp. Basically with an FX (modeling) processor in between a tube pre-amp and tube power amp. (like a FX Loop) There's a basic SS stage to correct the level prior to the processor. It's actually quite a simple tube amp otherwise. I actually worked and easily tweaked one a few times. If the modeling section is the problem determine that right away and then maybe decide whether it's worth your time. If it's something simple like bad tube or power section issue it's fixable. All a matter of how much effort you want to put into it.

The amp drops volume after a bit of playing, so im hoping its something that i can immediately spot when i open it up. Praying for a burned/open resistor that's easily accessible here..

A tube can do that. It'a about gain right? Resistors don't generally fluctuate back and forth in value. Open or shut or drift and stay. Solder joints can become high resistance and go wide with heat without dropping out. Pots do too. Bias pot? Redplate? I don't think you'll find a smokey resistor. In fact, the more I think about it I don't think you'll find any passive component that drops gain when warm. It sounds like a gain component. Either a bottle full of electrons or a little dab of sand. Butt, yer never noes.tribi9 wrote:The amp drops volume after a bit of playing, so im hoping its something that i can immediately spot when i open it up. Yeah, give it a look. The boards and components are not too hard to get to.tribi9 wrote:The amp drops volume after a bit of playing, so im hoping its something that i can immediately spot when i open it up. Praying for a burned/open resistor that's easily accessible here..

Skyboltone, I was thinking/hoping maybe a screen grid resistor on one of the power tubes but I'll just wait til I actually see it.
Maybe the guy will just forget and not bring it in.
