Grille cloth opinions please

Post by jeff12 »

Just picked up what I think is a 1968 Marshall 4x12 that had pinstripe grille cloth. When i got it it had no grille cloth, I put some on the cabinet I had around the house to protect the speakers. Question is how much different will it sound with pinstripe cloth compared to basket weave? Also cabinet is a little rough, is it worth the extra $$$$ for the pinstripe grille? Sound and value wise. :) :(
Thanks

Man isn't that stuff like $500 a yard?

Jim from Scumback Speakers has experience with it I believe, I'm sure he will chime in.

Okay I guess that's just more I can invest in amp parts.
Uncovered a stencil on the back that said animal Farm.
Only thing I could find was a flyer for a 1970 concert in Ohio with Deep Purple,Free and Animal Farm. Anyone ever hear of them?

The EC Pinstripe cloth is great. You have to be going for old school classic rock tones with it, IMO, but it does a very nice "thing" to the midrange compared to regular basketweave. I have two cabs with the EC cloth, which is how I know.

But, if your budget says no to $500 cloth, then be happy with what you have and play.

Thanks for the input, I think before I purchased EC cloth I would want to hear a cab with the it in person. So for now I will enjoy what I have as is. :)

There's a YT video of Doug Rappaport (guitarist for Edgar Winter) playing a Metro amp through one of my tall cabs w/EC cloth at the 2012 LA Amp Show. You might take a look for that to hear it if you like.

But you're right, hearing it in person next to a basketweave cab is the best way to judge the tone. Next time you're in So Cal, shoot me an email for a demo room appt, and you can try them out side by side from the pile.

What's the ec cloth made out of that makes it so expensive?

It's probably because it is painted cloth, they use some kind of vinyl for the stripes.

I own a Marshall model 1982JH handwired cab which has "bluesbreaker" striped cloth. I have owned many Marshall cabs, but this one seems to have a more "open" sound. It doesnt seem to beam as much. The basketweave is a close second to this effect compared to the regular checked or black cloth. I believe it can be had for cheaper than $500 a yard.
