Grounding question

Post by iknowjohnny »

Since i am rebuilding my marshall style amp with a new board, i have a question about grounding before i go ahead and do it the same way. Not that it's noisy, in fact it's probably quieter than most for what it is, but i still figure that is there is a more proper way maybe i should change it.

That said, the board is laid out as usual, and right after the end of the signal chain is the bias supply and main rectifier. There is empty space between the signal chain and that so no issues there. I have a ground buss, a wire running the length of the board to which all the preamp grounds go and also at the end of it is the bias supply caps are grounded. Then at that point a wire takes it to the main PSU ground bolt. The question is, should those bias caps be separated from that main ground buss and have it's own separate wire going to the main ground bolt? I don't know if more proper grounding is beneficial if the amp is already quiet but if so then i'd like to do this right. Thanks.

If it's already quiet I'd leave it alone.
You can search "Larry grounding scheme" on here or over at Metro.
Merlins website has some good info too.
Grounding can be confusing for sure.
I usually do separate ground points for each power supply node.
Lots of ways to do it.

I use Hoffman's grounding scheme and my amps are very quiet.

Guess i'll leave it then, thanks.

One more question tho if u don't mind, rather then start a new thread. It's pretty much like a 2204 with a lot of mods, but basically the same circuit. Are there any components that are worth separating by a full turret space? I ask this because i use pre drilled boards and the preamp all the way thru the PI has every row taken (tho no filters on the board, use a multi can) but this time i am changing a few things on the layout that will give me a few rows of space. So if there are any components best separated by some space i can do that. I just don't know what components might benefit from that if any.

Please don't take this as advice.
I've only built a couple of Marshalls.
My first one I didn't even look at any previous layouts.
2204 is a very stable amp - I get away with murder.
I do tend to wing it...
I do like the TMB caps & slope resistor close to the pots.
Hope someone else chimes in.
Bad advice - ignore me.
Good Luck.
