Anyone build an Orange?
Guys,
Last night I was watching a great clip from Free doing Fire and Water. In this video both Fraser and Kossoff were playing thru Orange Graphic amps with two 4x12 bottoms. Really nice sound.
While I've seen Marshalls and Hiwatts built here has anyone done a Graphic MK II Orange amp? These were also used by Wishbone Ash when I saw them with Focus waaaayyyy back when.
I've found a couple of schematics but no layouts or info about that FAC dial or PT and OT options.
Anyone? Bueller? Anyone....

i havent, but an original orange by matamp was one of the most amazing amps i've ever played. i'd say go for that one if you could find out the info on it.

Re: Anyone build an Orange?
I built an OD120 type, or as Weber calls it, 6o100 . http://taweber.powweb.com/store/kits_60b.htm#6o100
Absolutely amazing, scary amp. It was my second build, and I've been meaning to get back into it, as I wasn't exactly sure what I was doing at the time. lots of tones available, and of course the sludge guys love em.
Check out the Orange Amp Field Guide for schemes/history and all related Matamp, Electric drama/saga, especially when you throw Matt Pike into the picture. Also, check the Wizard Amps, as they're basically Oranges with an added gain stage.
The FAC is a rotary switch that adds different coupling caps in series to go from dark to bright. I've used it in homebrews/conversions in lieu of a tonestack.
I've got a neat Orange catalog from the 70s I'll try and dig up later.

Re: Anyone build an Orange?
The oldest schematic I can find is for the Graphic type which also sounds pretty good. I'll keep looking thanx!

Smoke
Yeah that's very helpful. I can compare the schematic to their layout. Didn't figure someone would make an Orange kit...
Thanx.

Here's the Graphic MKii, along with others : http://www.prowessamplifiers.com/schematics/orange/
I haven't looked at them in a while, but as I recall, they're all similar in topology, at least the 70's ones people hunt down.

Really? I don't know of any schematics of Wizards, and every gut shot I've seen has clearly had a LTP, not cathodyme like the Orange. Also, check the Wizard Amps, as they're basically Oranges with an added gain stage.
If you build one, put the FAC between the first two stages like Matamps - it's more effective there.

Re: Anyone build an Orange?
That selector is couplers? I thought it was interstage bypass like on that 12-position thing you see on Ef86 amps.

Yep, just coupling caps from like 330p to .047 or whatever.

I built the Orange Retro 50.

I've got a chassis started with an MM Orange 50 transformer set.
4 x 6V6 output.
Still procrastinating about the pre-amp setup.
It will be different. Maybe a rotary switch filter.
Hmmm.

Re: Anyone build an Orange?
Ya know that orange thing I like so much is 4 stages plate drive TS. It's a special one. It's better than the others like it and proves that circuit has some soaring sustain magic in it. Lots of gain but really quiet sort of.

Yeah, but it's not an Orange, it just happens to have the logo on the front.
