No issues so far. Also no big thrill; will have to dig into the feature list.

There's some new features, like finder tabs but mostly meh, Everything since leopard for me had been mostly meh. The Finder division these last few updates has been doing good work making the system more useful, the rest is all tits on a bull for me. More bloat I think, all that crap from the f'ing iphone/ipad stuff plus all the social networking notification crap just keeps building like a tsunami. I just want a straight up good looking blazing fast os - but what can you do. 2 year old MBP and I get an awful lot of spinning rainbow sphincter for a $1300 machine.JazzGuitarGimp wrote:Anyone using Mavericks yet? IMO Win and Apple and software companies in general have just too many employees in 2013, apple like 20 thousand, and they all need to justify their existence and paychecks. Even if the house looks beautiful and is super comfortable they have to move the furniture and redecorate continuously so they can say they did something. Gone are the days when you can just move into some gadget and be comfortable with it for 20 years.
Had itunes lock up and had to force quit it twice, along with my 3G usb internet app, not sure what that's about. They got rid of the dull but not intolerable gray textured start up screen to a plain black screen like in terminal - when you boot now the only thing missing is a C prompt - WFT! and from a style minded company? And your start up pict is now an octagon shape for some really stupid reason. Octagons work for stop signs. Anyway, small complaints for now, and it's very nice that OSs will be free from now on. Keep a PC laptop 5 years and you suckers in the windows world can add $120-240 to the cost. If you come from windows land and buy a MBP and keep it 5 years deduct $120-$240.
I'm going over mavericks now to see what apps will/won't work, so far only Onyx won't, if you like to clean up w/ it do it before hand. I get the feeling too that soon the only installable apps will be from the itunes store.
BTW it's the slowest install I've ever seen in 20 years of mac use. I said ok on 40% battery and freaked when I saw 1 1/2 hrs, and you can't dim the screen or keyboard, it's all locked up on install. Ran to a mac dealer in town holding my laptop like a platter through the streets and they were nice to lend me a charger. So set time aside for the update.

I don't know why you'd look to OS X for that...bloat floating on top of Linux.... I just want a straight up good looking blazing fast os ...
Re: OS X Mavericks?
If I had the patience for it I might. Once this MBP turns to molasses I'll see. I play w/ Ubuntu on and off to keep in touch.vibratoking wrote:I don't know why you'd look to OS X for that...bloat floating on top of Linux.... I just want a straight up good looking blazing fast os ...
BTW Parallels 7 no play with Mavericks at all. All other apps are fine, looks like Parallels are being dicks and forcing $50 out of users. They know if you got Parallels you likely really need it.

Oops, you're right. My memory failed me again. It's built on FreeBDSM
It is a registered Unix OS.

Hey, RP, best laptop upgrade (desktop, too) is, of course RAM, but second, and equally important is a solid state hard drive. The productivity boost is awesome, across ALL daily operations. If you can only afford a small one (128MB min) put the OS and apps on it, and your data on a spinner.
Parallels Desktop is mandatory for me, because I develop web and media for Windows drones. Parallels 9 is working great, very fast, with Win7.

Oh yeah - I forgot about software compatibility. All of my CAD programs run on windoze, so I am using Fusion for my CAD partition. I'm going to need to find out if Fusion plays nice with Mavericks, thanks for pointing that out....

From what I gather the SSD's have some way to go before they are real dependable.
I like the idea of them, they are just not ready for prime time.

128 mega-byte's?
I'm guessing that should be 128 giga-byte's?
Don't think there are any more Mac or Win operating systems/apps that would fit on a 128MB drive.
Re: OS X Mavericks?
When I built this computer, I used a WD Raptor 74GB for the OS.
10,000 RPM's!
If I was smart I would have another larger Raptor for my files.
I have a WD 500GB internal as well. It's not a fast one but it works for archiving.
I also have an external HD that I back up to but I keep forgetting to do it!
The Raptor has been chugging along for five years.
I used to build a new PC every year or so to play games.
Don't play anymore, so this antique is my email/ surfing machine.

Yes, duh, 128GB. And they have matured and are reliable. Still, backups mandatory.

Re: OS X Mavericks?
I got 8GBs and I'm old school, I shut down any apps I'm not using, just can't get out of that habit. It's iphone/ipad bloat IMO. An SSD is in the works but I need minimum 256Gbs, I'll prolly go with 500GB as it's nice to have the headroom, I hate pushing limits on computers, unlike amps you don't get a lovely saturationxtian wrote:Hey, RP, best laptop upgrade (desktop, too) is, of course RAM, but second, and equally important is a solid state hard drive. Tom, I think ssds are more than ready for prime time. Apple Airs only come w/ ssds and they've been selling those by the millions, I doubt Apple would risk the bad rap and warranty issues if they weren't sure of them by now. Rumor has it that all MBPs will be Airs in two years. Btw it's more or less the same NAND technology that's in all the phones and USB sticks and I've yet to hear of anyone having any of those fail from a storage defect. I thnk the only issue is if you do an extra ordinary amount of write, like a video artist. Then you might 'wear it out' before the +5 year average joe expected life - which is the same for spinners.
Re: OS X Mavericks?
BTW word on those 10K RPM Raptors is that they outlast normal HDs. Make's you really wonder if the 5400-7200 rpm HDs have planned obsolescence and/or low quality control.
