SPDT Impedance Switch for 33W amp

Post by doveman »

Can I use this Carling SPDT switch (3amp 125v) to select between two 4-ohm and 8-ohm taps on a 33w amp (my Allen Accomplice build)? Size-wise I think it would fit better than alternatives. It's not a really powerful amp ... about a Vibrolux with 6L6s at 33w.

http://www.tubesandmore.com/products/P-H494

It's a TO35MT Allen OT ... here's the description: A high quality replacement output transformer for Vibrolux™, Pro™, Bandmaster™, Vibroverb™ and Tremolux™ amps and "vibroclone style" projects. Custom wound in the USA by Heyboer on a paper tube with paper layered and specially interleaved windings with a 4K ohm primary and both 4 and 8 ohm secondary taps for one or two speaker set ups. As used in the Accomplice, Brown Sugar and Encore amplifiers. Special low insertion loss lamination steel for increased output. Black oxide finish with 12" Unistrand pretinned leads for fast installation. 3-9/16" mounting centers. 2.4 lbs. A very sweet sounding transformer for 2x6L6 amps. Stainless-steel mounting hardware included!

I have used a 6amp 125v switch from Radio Shack for the same purpose in my D'Lite 22/33 build.

That switch only has three lugs.
I think what you want is a DPST, one that is On-On

On my D'Lite I used a DPDT (6 lug) switch but on this amp, I only need to choose between Green 8-ohm and Yellow 4-ohm taps ----> out to speaker jack tip. So ON-ON with 3 lugs would work I think.

Right now Green is connected to jack and Yellow is unused.

Easy to check with a ohmmeter.

I don't have the switch yet ... but it is coming in with some tubes today. I'm really asking about the 3 amps. Is it beefy enough for a small amp output?

Cool ... I think it will fit ... if 3 amps @ 125V will work ... I can easily check the signal path when it arrives.

Found enough room for the other impedance switch. I like it better since that's what it's designed to do. But the Carling switch would have worked, as well.

Happy camper - now I can switch between 8 and 4 ohms with 6L6s or 16 and 8 ohms with 6V6s.

To paraphrase Gertrude Stein "A switch is a switch is a switch." Unless you tried, I don't think you could buy one outside your rating. Just don't try to switch them hot. That's where the ratings come in.

The rating switches don't carry is between the external connection points. I've had 100W Marshalls with the triode/pentode thing short there. INSULATE.
