Not an exact copy. Changing the input tube is a fairly obvious mod. Changing the NFB is a bit more subtle. And of course the vacuum and iron sounds like Birmingham instead of Fullerton.

It's a common enough name. Stoner didn't bring up the Green, someone else found that. Orange, Green, 5F6A, JTM45..... everybody copies but changes the name/design just-enuff.

If this stoner is shilling for Green, he must be smoking some good chit to be posting 178 degrees away from what Green is offering. And why mention other brands like Randall? More likely our stoner has no connection to whoever is scribbling inside the Greens.

Learn computer algorithms. When it comes to totally metallic gnarl, you can do that in PC far faster than in real hardware.

Meanwhile build a Champ or Deluxe kit. You need to walk before you run. You need confidence on a simple build to get you through the major frustrations that complicated builds always throw in your path. You can ALWAYS find use for a small amp. Any amp you build with your own sweat and blood will sound better to your ears than any amp you just buy. And it is worth noting that many strong-flavored guitarists use quite simple amps.

I think a Plexi would be an ok amp as a first build. There is alot of info out there about them and it's a pretty versatile amp. If you planned the circuit board right you could make it so it wouldn't be too difficult to change it to a different circuit like a JCM800 2204 or something if it wasn't haevy enough for you. 5E3 or JTM-45 clone. Take your time. Buy good tools; xlite or klien for hand tools, a $200 temp controlled soldering iron. Really. I insist. Buy it used for $50 on ebay. Weller. Put a 25 watt tip on it. Have a 40 watt tip handy. Jump in. It's fun and all you can ruin is time and money.

i am well set up in the tool department, i work at a place called high end systems, we make automated lights for the entertainment industry and beyond i suppose.

I'm hella excited about this learning experience.
a little torn apart between a kits convienance and the scavenger hunt aspect of collecting the components myself (this is a daunting task).
when done i'd just like to be able to dial in a chunky sound that doesn't just scream marshall, which is hard to do with a marshall..
its good to want i guess.

i nosed around and the first four sabbath records were recorded on green amps or the matamps probably.
the rep told me the circuits are specialized to green amps i guess the mathias fellows design.

i didi not know sunnO))) was an amp brand either, turns out buzzo plays em, i love the melvins, seen em so many times, always sooo good.

This is excellent advice. I have built three, all scratchbuilt. Started with a 5F6-A, then a P1 eX (www.AX84.com), and recently a JCM 800 clone for my son. I had an absolute blast with the P1-eX. I added a tremolo circuit and Princeton based reverb. This is by far my favorite amp to play... so far.

The simplicity of the P1 eX (or Champ) makes it an excellent starting point for an ever expanding knowledge of tube based amplification.
