So what you think... CDE buying Vishay / Sprague OD Lines

Post by glasman »

So I was out stocking up on OOS parts this week and got into a panic when I couldn't find a few 225P caps that I have designed into a few of my products.

Seems Vishay sold off the Sprague orange drop line of capacitors. Wonder what this will mean in the future.

Guess it is time to start cross sourcing some new parts ....

IMHO, it's only a matter of time before analysts view that particular line as no longer viable and it will be migrated to end of life.

Or making mass orders of parts on their wa out the door.

There are days I spend more time looking for parts than building amps.

Mouser now has the CDE 715 and 225 series (listed on their site as "New Product") - but no 6PS series. CE Dist still has the 6PS, but will be interesting to see for how long. I'm going to give them a call.

edit - talked to CE Dist - they got a visit from the CDE guys who are building a new plant in Mexico and plan to continue supply for the long haul. Problem is they have had quite a few values on back order and did not have a good idea of when new stock will be coming in. The guy I spoke with seemed knowledgable and did not seem to be concerned about these parts going away.

I spoke to the main chief designer something or another guy with SBE a few weeks ago. He told me the same thing you guys said. I actually ordered a few ODs from CE Distribution not too long ago and the 6PS .01s are marked CDE and actually look a little different than the remaining values still marked Sprague. More reminiscent of the old Mallory PVCs. I asked him about that and he told me that there are likely remaining stocks of other values that still say Sprague. I also found out that the 6PS ODs are a hybrid type of metallized cap. I always thought they were true film and foil.

The 6PS are metallized above 1600V as I remember, it is stated in the spec sheet. Smaller sizes were film polyster construction. Of course this is from memory, so I might be wrong.

Gary, Mouser stocks some CDE DMT non metalized polyester film caps.
AFAIR they are the successors of Mallory PVC caps.
Maybe they fit to your layout?
Some of them are pretty pricey though.
0.1 uF 630v $3.96
0.1 uF 400v $4.56

Regards,

Markus
