laydown transformer orientation

Post by wsaraceni »

i only get to do this once, so i want to do it right.

im using a set of toneslut trainwreck transformers that i have a laydown endbell on the power transformer. since everything comes out the middle, i'm a little unsure which direction it mounts. there is a copper strip on the shorter two sides and the longer two sides are plain. do the longer sides go front to back or parallel to the front and rear?

A.

No idea which way it should go. But what you could do is hool up some headphones to the OT secondary and put power to your PT. Try the transformers in different orientations to get the lowest hum. Don't forget to tape off the unused leads.

There is no 'once' in tube amp building.

Otherwise - what Mark said.

I like B, but I would recommend confirming that by energizing the PT and measuring the induced voltage on the OT secondary. You can set the PT up on some blocks and similarly the OT to bring it up to the level it will be when they are both mounted to the chassis. You can rotate the OT to see which way is best.
