Anyone have an ampeg distortion v4?

Post by ampfab »

I recently acquired an ampeg v4, from about 1976, with distortion control. With a bit of work I got it up and running nice, sounds great, huge tone controls. Just wondering if my distortion is working properly. I know that it's not supposed to be a great sounding distortion, more of a fuzz. It definitely distorts, but sounds kind of half distorted. You can hear both a clean and distorted tone at the same time. Is this normal? Or do I possibly have a diode bad?
Thanks

Ampeg's built in distortion also found in mid-late 70's VT-40 and V2, always sounded naff to me. Maybe naff isn't strong enough, change that to just 'orrible. :P

Easy enough to open 'er up and check the diode. Or just ignore that channel entirely.
down technical blind alleys . . .
