Sounds too much like Tennessee Jed.

plus it's about cats...not even really big ones.

I can see the appeal, born too late to see the real thing, you're in college and you wanna rebel a little by going through a hippy phase, they come through playing every few semesters within driving distance of your private college and you can carpool, and Dave Mathews won't be around again until finals roll around....

Vassar flew out to California to play with the old and in the way project.

They left the airport and he looks up on a billboard and sees something about the Grateful Dead on it. He says, "David, that guy looks like our banjo player!" and Dave Grisman says, "Vassar, that is our banjo player." Then Vassar says, "Oh, he plays in a bunch of bands, I guess.".

Plenty of good material along those lines, from authentic old bluegrass up to modern, also OAITW bootlegs.

The following, I don't know if it made it to CD but my old LP keeps my ears happy: The David Grisman Quintet, recorded Oct - Dec '76 at 1750 Arch Studio. Incredible playing, perfect ambience (no audience just the room echo). Was released on Kaleidoscope Records (Kaleidoscope F-5), distributed by Flying Fish. Good huntin', you'll dig it!

After OAITW I went on a bluegrass/folk buying binge, also saw lots of great live shows including Vassar Clements at a big fest in central Vermont. The David Grisman record is "top of the heap" of what I found & hope you can find a copy, in whatever format you can.

Another rare artist/band to look out for is Frank Wakefield and the Good Old Boys. And if you can't get enough Vassar, he's on Dicky Betts' first solo album, Highway Call, jammin' as only he could. Lotta good tunes on there.

Now that's some funny stuff! There's a lot of the Grateful Dead that's tough not to snooze through. And then they go and do a song like Casey Jones. I remain confused.
It's a guitar amplifier. How hard can it be?

A jam band I have liked for many years is "The String Cheese Incident", definitely worth a listen. Their guitar / mandolin / violin guy, Michael Kang has recently started another jam band called "Dead Phish", guess no description is needed there....

I bet Tom remembers enough to lead us all in Country Joe's rousing Fish-Cheer from Woodstock.
