Brian May Vox AC30's

Post by JoeCon »

Guys

Was reading from his guitar/amp tech that those 9 amps are not all cooking. In fact some only have speakers in them. Check it out:
The bottom 3 AC's are on, maybe it's the mics that give it away?? The middle one is set clean and the two outside ones are are on dirty. The next row are "backups" that are on standby in case any of the bottom 3 FRY!! And the top 3 have no amps but carry spare speakers that they need while on tour. Damn I thought all of those were on, the Mrs. is never gonna let me build 9 Rockets now!! LOL....

For shure... ;) Story I got many years ago was yes, 2nd rank are backups, then the 3rd. Kind of like an old battle line. May, what were ye thinkin? Great player, very smart guy. Thinkin' good.

Backline might have changed since then with top rank as speaker spares carriers but don't change the view. It is magnificent!

Heard also that The Edge was doing similarly. And U2 had a tour amp tech whose only job it is, to make sure the herd of Voxes is ready to roxes... plus a dozen or so spares. Much to the relief ot the guitar tech who can concentrate on axes & everything else in the rig. Edge also has a spare Bradshaw switching rack likely crammed with delays, last I heard.

I don't recall where I saw it but there is a video where May's tech explains the set up and a fire extinguisher gets a mention "because one of the AC30s went up in flames in the middle of a gig."
