500k pot for 1 meg
Can i sub a 500k pot for a 1 meg if i put a 500k R to the outer lugs will this work? thanks mark

What's the function of the pot?mark enger wrote:Can i sub a 500k pot for a 1 meg if i put a 500k R to the outer lugs will this work? thanks mark

No.
When you turn the pot up, the following circuit will see 1M, but when you turn the pot down, the circuit will still see 500K instead of zero.

That was an easy one.
Re: 500k pot for 1 meg
Really depends on the circuit but here is a tweed control.

The bass control is mostly out of the circuit, the treble is the tone control. The left trace is the 1M while the 500k is the right, at min and max.

Re: 500k pot for 1 meg
What does that have to do with the OP's question?

You can use a 500k in a Tweed tone control circuit but the turnover frequencies will be different. If that is acceptable to you everything is good. Otherwise you have to scale the capacitor values also. Good to know if you do not have the right pot value and want to use one you have. The adding a 500k resistor was already dealt with so I did not comment about that. Can i sub a 500k pot for a 1 meg if i put a 500k R to the outer lugs will this work? thanks mark
Did I give too much information? Sorry.
Re: 500k pot for 1 meg
You could probably get away with 500k pot for a volume / gain control where 1meg is specified, too - depends on the circuit and how many compromises the OP is/was prepared to make.
(But this isn't the same as turning a 500k pot to a 1meg one by adding any resistors.)

Re: 500k pot for 1 meg
I don't really like making compromises when choosing components, especially on pots.
My advice is to get the specified pot and install it.

True. Mind you, as a volume control it might fly if you do not want maximum gain.Tillydog wrote:You could probably get away with 500k pot for a volume / gain control where 1meg is specified, too - depends on the circuit and how many compromises the OP is/was prepared to make.

Every circuit is a compromise. The question is, can this give me what I want.Structo wrote:I don't really like making compromises when choosing components, especially on pots.

thanks - yep sound different. pots are where quality can really be heard, as well as value.I don't really like making compromises when choosing components, especially on pots.
local guitar/music store should have em walk in if your in a decent size town.
it really is a journey, and you just cant farm out the battle wounds
