Build Suggestion

Post by yalesmith »

I have a vox power transformer can be seen here:
http://www.classictone.net/40-18050.html

Any Suggestions? I have built a TW rocket (actually 2) and I have not had great results. I was thinking about an 4 el84 powered JCM 800 but have not found anything yet on that mod. Any other ideas? I don't really care if its clean or dirty amp. I just want to build something that sounds good. Any and all suggestions will be appreaciated.

How about a Liverpool?

With that PT, you aren't limited in current capacity, just voltage, maybe. Seems to me like you have a good range of stuff you can do with that one. Doesn't have to be EL84s.

Id think with soild state recto you could build just about any marshall 50 watt design using 6v6 power tubes for about 25watts, not sure how el34 would sound with 350- 360 volts but 6v6 should be fine, I've built a few amps with el34 cathiode biased with lower plate voltages and they sounded great you should check out the phat ass amps over a weber forum there really just a 18watt lite with bigger power tubes great sounding easy to build amps mark

Though I'm not exactly sure what you mean, I've had similar results :o
Turns out I'm just not an EL84 kinda dude, or at least I just can't seem to build an amp that sounds good with them

I have a liverpool and it is the best amp I have heard or built to date. It is truly a great amp.

As far as the Rocket, I built two of them, one was good and other I had to scrap. I am luke warm about the rocket sometimes I play it sand it is good and others I am like blah....

I was thinking how a Matchless lighting would sound running 4 el84's. Here is the link:

I wonder what I would nead to do in terms on any modification. I am also partial to amps with effects loops.

I hear you guys about the Rocket. I, however, am in love with that circuit. It's definitely very far from higher gain type circuits, like the Pool or Express. It's just about utilizing the special qualities of the AC30TB/Rocket. They get much cleaner without needing to use the guitar's volume pot. I keep it on the threshold between a fair amount of grit and dead clean, both determined by the attack. My opinion, anyway. :)

Funny I just ran my rocket through my Mesa 4/12 cab loaded with Celestiion 30s and it was one of those I see why people love that circuit. Some much better than the two other cabs.... Still not like the pool or express.

The problem is I see a bunch of circuits I like Carmen ghia, matchless lighting but those call for a pair of el84s and it would be a waste to use that transformer. Not sure how I would increase the output from a technical standpoint . Any thoughts?

Very simple upping the power section to accommodate a couple more tubes. Look at the AC15 schem against the AC30 schem and you have an idea how much changes. And TAG is a great place to ask the questions you need answered.

Ya know a 4 el84 ghia is a v1 Mazerati. Personally I don't care for that weird PI circuit in that amp. Also a full on Mazerati GT is a wild beast that sounds amazing. I'll PM you a something nice.

+1 on the Mazerati GT. That thing is ferocious and damn loud. When I owned mine, I found it to be too bright for me, but that's an easy fix, especially when building your own amp. Very simple as well.

How about a 6v6 amp? Then you can use solid state rectifier without being over voltage for EL84's.
