3 Monkeys - Grease Monkey
Just curious what anyone here thinks of these things. Been wanting to play one for years, but never come across one. Seems to be similar to a Liverpool, but I don't have a clue. I only know that the clips I've heard sound very good. Funny lookin, too. Has anyone here played one?

Miles mentioned 3 monkeys the other day but I thought it was one of his ummm... outbursts. It's an amp builder? Sorry to post something of no value but I never heard of 'em. Well ya learn somethin' every day and it isn't even 8 AM yet.

See no, hear no, speak no. The three monkey denial parable. Notice you don't see them so much anymore? They were rounded up and worked to death in a slave camp. See evil. Hear evil. Speak evil or be evil.
BB, 3 Monkey amps ain't no Marshall. Anything that is good is fine, but 3M and 65s all seem like redos of better amps. See, you have to be mean.

I think you can say that about most amp companies. I have only heard them in demo's and stuff, but I for one really like the way they go about things with their designs and practical features, and for a business where nothing is really new they have my respect.Reeltarded wrote:

I am kind of saying that. I only say that because most of us have the whole bag of tricks between us, not to diss peeps in business.

Re: 3 Monkeys - Grease Monkey
Well, I guess I kind of agree, in that I wouldn't buy one. Most amps are pretty cheap to build. I think the clips I've heard sound good and I'm just curious what going on beneath the hood. Probably nothing too interesting. Can't believe Reel mentioned Marshall...
Their Orangutan model is similar to an Orange amp, no?
And Leo, Brad Whitford is one of the 3 Monkeys. I'm guessing he's the one who plays them and makes sure they turn on and off.

Do they have a 900 pound Gorilla?
Hm, I think I've heard of Brad. Big hair rocker, right? Oh yeah now I remember, saw him at the Budokan in May 1994. That was me standing behind the FOH mixer person. Interesting show! We need another monkey, holding his nose.
And a politician monkey, covering his butt...
(not knockin' the monkeys 3, just think they shouldn't have stopped at 3 in the old legend/saying.)

Guitarist Magazine has kind of a non-review/shootout thing with this amp in the August issue. Their editor liked it, but found it not his cup of tea. Then the four participants blind tested four amps and three out of four preferred a Fender Hot Rod. Go figure.
Closer to home, the RedPlate BlackVerb got some nice comments.

Brad Whitford = Aerosmith
Around 2006 Brad worked with Greg Howard (guitar tech) and Ossie Ahsen (amp tech) to build custom amps.
Later they started 3 Monkey Amps around 2008.

As far as I know, the orangutan is an orange graphic mk ii with 6V6 output tubes. I think one pair is fixed bias and the other cathode biased. The grease monkey is a top boost with a couple extra knobs.

Are you still interested. I've got the Grease Monkey Proto and a Virgil.Blackburn wrote:Just curious what anyone here thinks of these things. Re: 3 Monkeys - Grease Monkey
The Grease Monkey and Virgil could not be more different.
GM has a very good combination of Chime and Grind. Responds very well to the Gtr's Volume. Mine does not have a MV and it's sweet spot is hitting the speaker pretty hard when the EL84's get in the game. This is pretty loud. I have not played a production GM. Cut and Shape are nice additions and I find them useful depending on the PUP and Speaker. The proto is generally hand wired PTP
The Virgil has two channels, Clean and Overdrive. Clean is decent and based on the amp's Volume control can deliver a nice edge of breakup. Definitely does not have the chime the GM delivers as one would expect. The Overdrive channel is dark and thick and yet very balanced and responsive to pick attack. This channel delivers a ton of bottom so the Bass control stays fairly low. The Overdrive channel has its own Volume enabling volume matching to the Clean channel.

Yeah, the clips I've heard of the GM sound really good. I'm curious what's going on under the hood. Care to post some gut shots? You've gotten me even more curious now, saying it's PTP.
