Disco

Post by boots »

My 9 year old son was curious about disco. So I let him watch a couple John Travolta things on you tube.

In the words of the great Dr. Johnny Fever, "Disco Still Sucks".

Afterwards, I tried to cleanse his mind by making him watch some Led Zepplin and Hendrix videos.

I sure hope my kids grow up OK....
Don't you boys know any NICE songs?

I'm totally with you. Disco sucks.

Yeah, except when I learned to play an instrument…and then realized some disco is really well performed, produced, arranged and recorded. Tower of Power. Blondie. Play that Funky Music White Boy. Chic with Nile Rodgers. I'm sure there are others, but now I've embarrassed myself.

Hey! Tower of Power and Wild Cherry are not Disco, and if you say it again I'll... I'll... well, I don't know what I'll do! Blondie started as New Wave, then evolved into a diverse blend, including Disco. Which does still suck.

Ok. I will stand for disco. I like the best of it. Call me names or whatever but Mary Ellen Kite kissed me with the Bee Gees weedling about fevers.

This is why I have no new memories. You want to know what sucks worse than disco?

TURN ON YOUR RADIO

Nothing but thrash metal tones without chops and some dickhole crying with a fake Eddie Vedder into a USB port. True.

Ah! So it's the funk and R&B that I actually like! Thanks for easing my mind, Martin.

Whenever any new genera becomes hot there are a lot of wannabe's with a little talent that can ride the wave for a bit, but they are not pulling their weight. Good is good, though, and you have to respect that.

The cookie monster vocal styling doesn't get you laid without lingering consequence. Thank God.

Yeah, good is good. That's my rule but it's based on my tastes, and that there is no accounting for.. if you are averaging in everything.

I am less of a spectator though. Hard to listen to anything, really, except the female vocalists in that epic thread of awesome. Good one. :)

Sorry, Disco was a blight on music.

Not sure which was worse, disco or the Urban Cowboy thing.

There was sure a lot of fake cowboys and cowgirls, thankfully it didn't last long.
Nothing against Country Western which I am a fan of a few artists.

But I am basically a dumb rock and roll dude. :D

Gotta love Carmine Appice no mater what he does (he wrote that one).

I was a stoner kid but I always had a west-side-story thing for the foxy lowrider chicks so I'm pretty well versed in all that stuff, not to mention all the cool funk of the era, Ohio players, Parlament/funkadelic, EW&F, TOP, Zapp and Roger, Fatback, Slave, Brick, Dazzband, BT express etc. so many memories...

Cruise night comes around, throw some cinder block in the trunk of my friend's older brother's Impala and put this on the stereo;

Ok then. I'm with Miles here. Take a listen to Eric and Steve Winwood do "Can't find my way home" with Derik Trucks and another guitarist's kid whose name I can't remember. That's some true rock! Then go listen to "Valerie" buy Winwood. That's Disco kids. Like it or not but Winwood is one of the truly greats of our age. He can do any damn thing he wants and it's awesome!

The other "kid" is my buddy Doyle Bramhall II (If 45 years old is still considered a kid), I went to high school with him and we played the blues till he dropped out to go on the road with the Fabulous Thunderbirds!

Yeah, I hate rap as much as cookie monster d-tuned metal, even worse when you combine the two like Korn and all that crap.
