Countdown: Vandalized Stratocaster Redux

Post by Reeltarded »

Before Saturday at 3pm I will have a friend's Strat that was vandalized stripped from it's awful condition to nice and smooth ALPB. (almost lake placid blue) with a new neck and mostly new parts and electronics. He picked the color from easy to get rattle can fare at Autozone. Ironically his son knocked my primary and touchup guns over a while back without saying anything and my paint rig is down for a methylene soak. At this point cover your kid's eyes.

Fucking kids.

Has a sunken Kahler plug and all the pg holes need filling. Body appears to be makore or similar. Mealy texture that you can pick at like hard styrofoam. The contour is flat edged, the roll over on the treble side is shelved on one side and breaks flat to the top. Fix all that too. Flat white until it stops drinking then block out and shoot color. Rattle cans suck.

I will be popping pictures at each step so everyone can play along here. I have a couple other guitar kits going but this one is a real mess and under a tight schedule because he needs it Saturday at 6 PM over an hour away. Let's rise with the Sun.

I said LETS RISE WITH THE SUN!

Can someone please flip the switch? It's dark out there.

Every picture tells a story, don't it?

MM neck I finished years ago for a non-payer. Bone set, transitional decal applied, materials to scrape and surface back side for danish oil finish.

Reel

A little more sanding in key places you got an extremly rare "relic-roadworn" finish that the custom shop couldn't do. Doesn't Fender charge extra for that stuff??

Ask Tom Murphy who the father of relic is.

This is a real mess. Enamel turned into rubber cement and that crap plug is going to be t-rubble.

Saturday at 3pm. I need sunlight and lots of heat. Blow me, weather.

Use a cheap heat gun to remove the finish.

Keep the gun moving to avoid scorching and use a 2 inch putty knife to scrape it as it comes loose.

Wear eye protection as some times the finish will pop hot pieces into your face. :D

You should really try Tru Oil on the neck.
I was told and told to try it but once I did, never going back to lacquer or any other neck finish.

Four applications danish oil and two of tru oil into it right now. The neck is already finished in non-plasticated lacqerismsmo. Scraped the back to wood this AM.

Heat gun? No. On enamel I would normally use a torch, bit I don't have a torch here. I do have AC stripper and 2nd degree chemical burns on 80% of my person. Not my first time at thos rodeo! Yeehaw! Ouch.

Good.

I have found that the chemical strippers don't touch the polyester sealers.
They will work on some urethane type finishes.

Anyway, I don't envy you, horrible stuff to take off.

Good luck!
