Caps..big couplers/small bypass vs small couplers/big bypass

Post by iknowjohnny »

Just looking for opinions to see what people here think about this subject. What i'm talking about is what you generally find in fenders vs marshalls as far as shaping the preamp signal. Fenders tend to have very small coupling caps as low as 500pf and beef up the tone with large cathode bypass caps. Marshall seems to do the exact opposite. At first i figured this was because marshalls often have higher gain preamp stages and many have cascaded preamp generated distortion so thier method i figured is better at tightening the bottom which is very important in praemps cascaded to generate distortion. But in my master volume marshall type build which i've always used the typical marshall scheme, varying it slightly to tweak it to my liking, i recently tried a quick test by replacing the 1st .0047uf coupler with a 500 pf, them changing the .68uf cathode bypass on that stage trying a 10uf and then a 22uf. It actually sounded very good, tho the lows were indeed sloppier. But not by a huge margin.

Thats as far as i went because i knew that if i were to decide to go that route it would mean i'd be spending endless hours tweaking and perfecting it to get the tone as good as i can and tighten up the lows, and i'm not sure i want to go there. But this experiment really intrigued me big time and got me wondering about the possibilities. So I doubt i'd ever go this route since the amp is so good as is, but i'm really curious about what thought others here have given to this idea if any, and if so what conclusions they have come to.
