Splitting Turrets

Anyone else have problems splitting the underside of turrets when pressing them? Even with a lighter touch and a small drill press I still split them in a couple places on the bottom. It seems like the turret is too long, but I'm using Hoffman's and 1/8" garolite from McMaster Carr. I swear I used to not have this 'problem' as well. I suppose it does not matter at all, but little stuff gets to me sometimes.

I've never had problems with the Hoffman turrets splitting on the Hoffman board material. And I use a hammer and a staking tool for mine.

When I tried using the turrets on board material that was too thin, it was an issue.

I would think (without seeing what is going on there) that the board material is too thin for the turret you are using OR the hole is drilled too big for the turret. Can you post some pics?

It might be the angel of the point you are using to stake them.

It could also be the alloy of the turret. I do a lot of machining in brass, and the right alloy makes all the difference.

They should be alloy 360, a leaded free machining brass. Many mfg are going away from leaded, but it makes it not flow. Lead free brass also solders poorly.
