150mA PT

Post by Smokebreak »

Reel's build has me itching for another 50w EL34 test bed, as my last one is permanent now. Looking at Classictone 50w PT http://www.classictone.net/40-18095.pdf(best example as this has multiple HT taps)...I noticed all the Marshall 50 watters are only 150mA. I've gone through some threads where the discussion is over my head, but there are always 2 opinions on the matter...yes it will be fine and no it won't.

What's the straight dope here? Is it a longevity issue? Smoke issue? Output issue?

I have lost lots of sleep and not one transformer so far. :)

What do you want as a tube compliment? Stock 150mA PT runs cool with standard 3 ax7 and a pair of 34s. It runs easy to touch warm with +1 ax7 but no problem. I run higher voltages on the preamp than usual and feed them from the same node so probably could drop it as a standard 1987 and have a little headroom that I don't?

I was looking at Fender replacements at more like 200mA and also for something less than 50w the AC30 PT that is proven to slug it out with a pile of tubes. Did you check out their project transformers? Lots of taps and 200mA capacity.

This is the thing I know least about. The power in general. Totally paranoid and always surprised when it works.

Yea I'm thinking a couple 34s and a few ax7s, but I'd like to find one that can run 6L6 too, which I believe is getting more than risky at 150mA. CT project PTs seems to be missing the Marshall project section, and they have 1 "universal" PT at 500mA. I don't think I have the closet space for that. This one looks promising for a 50w catch all : http://www.classictone.net/40-18094.pdf. I just wish there was 1 more lower HT tap!
I do have one of these which is nice on paperhttp://taweber.powweb.com/store/PTGPsch.jpg. Yet to use it.

Here's another question. I just finished a EH-150 with 6V6 that I'll post about, but the donor iron is 150mA as well(why I didn't use 6L6), so why not stick EL34s in it and see how it sounds?

I use the classic tone 50w and 100w Marshall iron and like the product very well.
