In the past I have always used eyelets for my projects. I have decided that I like working with turrets for certain applications. Where is the best place (ie: Cheapest) to buy double turrets for 1/8" circuit board material.

I guess the thing about turrets is you can make a mechinical connection by wrapping leads/wires around the turrets before soldering.But most everyone I see just stuffs the leads down in the hole.

Or are we talking about uncontrollable cursing?

Works both ways (cursing notwithstanding). Wrapping leads a half turn around the turret, and then solder, is good. The double turrets can easily hold three components: two wrapped around the posts (one on the high part, another underneath) and a third with leads dropped into the holes. Flexible and easy to work with. After using them in several builds now, I like 'em better than eyelets.

But....don't loose sight of the eyelets (pun..intended!).

There are many places on a board where they are preferred over turrets (i.e. where you have more than ~3 components coming together in one place).

I, generally, prefer turrets. However, I have recently started using both and have been kicking myself for not doing that a lot earlier.

I like turrets if I know what I'm building Alot of times I make it up as I go along.Eyelets are much easier for swapping parts.

I use turrets from Watts

I will put a wire down into the hole, but before I do I hit the top of the turret with some fine grit sandpaper and really make sure the solder joint is shiny and perfect. Sometimes the turrets have a layer of oxidation on top.

If you have a CE account the 3mm are only $1.40 per 10 pack. I think you can get 4 small leads in these if your careful. Some times I'll drill the tops out just a bit also.

I love Watts too but at $27 for a 100 I'll shop CE.

Not too bad, although the filter caps don't fit on the two inner terminals. Other than that, I haven't run into any real problems...yet. Still just mounting components, though.

I like turrets to wrap parts around, but also because under-board wires can come up through the turrent center post and wrap around the post. I'm always paranoid about under-board wiring falling out during a parts swap with eyelets.

Not too bad, although the filter caps don't fit on the two inner terminals. Other than that, I haven't run into any real problems...yet. Still just mounting components, though.

I was using boards like the one from Weber and they are just OK. I think they are not as nice as a real turret board. (Also, you can buy the same board on eBait direct from China for half the price, postage included.)

I found for about $10 you can buy a real generic turret board: http://www.tubesandmore.com/products/P-HTUR-60 I used one of these in my last build and liked it a lot better and it is worth the extra few dollars. Because it has lots of unused holes, I was able to add a few turrets in key locations to make it more suitable for my needs. Of course, YMMV.

One thing I don't want to do is drill and stake my own board. The fiberglass is supposed to be carcinogenic if you breathe it in, and I don't have the proper dust collection system to be working with it. Once in a while I drill an extra hole keeping the drill at slow speed to control the flying dust. It is wise to wear a proper mask when drilling.
