Ace Tone BASE-3

Look what arrived today! Fifteen-watt Japanese combo. No speaker, no promise it works, but couldn't resist at $70 including shipping!

Someone has swapped all the tone caps for an odd assortment. May be a teardown.

Cool. The tone caps were most likely all bad.Pretty much every one of those old Japenese Oil caps I've ever tested has been bad.The couple that have tested within spec make my teles tone control sound like a wah.

Hey, it works! Has some trouble with RF interference (not surprising given the state of the lead dress and crappy wiring--just look at all that 24 ga. solid core, all bundled up together and running willy nilly hither and yon.

Power tubes are 50H-B26. Here's the sheet: http://www.mif.pg.gda.pl/homepages/fran ... 0H-B26.pdf (someone helpfully wrote Engrish translations). Says max plate V is 350; mine is 374. Measured my plate diss. at 50 and 55 mA, giving me about 40 watts.

There is an unused tap with slightly lower B+ voltage, so I'll swap to that. Will clean sockets and pots, and see if it behaves for a while.

Yeah that's pretty clean, seems salvageable as is. Cool find!

Nice find!

Is't it weird that the stuff we used to scoff at is now worth $$?
